Rain fell across the east and parts of the west midwest and south ending the drought that afflicted much of 1930. Heaviest showers appeared near Cleveland with a brief but heavy spell while north central regions saw no new relief.
Rain and high winds broke a long drought in most of middle Tennessee with Nashville receiving the heaviest rainfall at 1.1 inches. Strong winds disrupted communications and high water halted traffic on state highways 1 and 2 overnight.
Light rains fell in southern Illinois and Kentucky easing the drought as reports came in from Washington Boston Detroit and nearby cities. Rain offered limited relief but drought conditions persisted in several regions.
Secretary of War Hurley approved the Chicago sanitary district's plan to raise water flow from Lake Michigan into the Chicago sanitary canal as an emergency drought measure. The district will set the increased flow, with excess water to be made up by reducing diversion after the emergency ends.
A telegram detailing Ouachita parish drought relief needs will be sent to the American Red Cross in Washington. The move follows a courthouse meeting of Red Cross workers, parish officials, and local banks to draft the request.
Cotton consumed in July totaled 378 835 bales of lint and 58 581 bales of linters, with June figures 405 818 and 58 501 and last year 47 165 and 79 798. For the cotton year ending July 31 output reached 6 113 932 bales of lint and 804 395 of linters, against 7 091 065 and 879 269 last year.

The Louisiana Power and Light company announced that Sunday the new high power line between the Sterlington power plant and Alto would begin operation. The 110 volt capacity line, completed in two months, runs from the West Monroe line along the Ouachita river, crosses to a Benson land substation, then to Alto, serving cotton gins, industrial plants and farms in the area.
EL DORADO Ark Aug 15 C C Thames 80 a truck driver was instantly killed when a bridge on an oil field road near Smackover collapsed beneath his truck overturning the vehicle and crushing him.
Detroit and New York games were postponed due to rain with St Louis at Boston also delayed.
In Elmira New York on August 15 a mob of about 1500 gathered outside the international workers relief camp at Van Etten to burn buildings. Sheriff 6 deputies and 10 state troopers kept order with drawn revolvers as leaders gave the camp 30 minutes to evacuate. The crowd upset by flag desecration charges against Mabel Husa and Arlene Holmes delayed after International Labor Defense obtained a postponement.
In Coalmont Princeton dated August 15 rescue teams persisted after a blast trapped 46 miners. The main fan was repaired but toxic gases limited work. two hoistmen Albert Cole and Clifford Smith, aged 19 and 40, were recovered dead and one man was rescued alive.

Long opened a district tour in four southeast towns and planned stops at Denham Springs Ponchatoula and Hammond while Ransdell kicked off in Donaldsonville and scheduled Covington Baton Rouge rallies. Ransdell announced a trip to DeRidder Monday with a New Orleans outdoor rally Tuesday.
A manhunt was launched for a Black laborer suspected of killing Claude Harper a 40 year old section foreman and robbing him of 2000 dollars. Harper was found dead near his Dermott home.
W H Bill Howell 64 a triple murderer was executed at 7 05 am at the Arkansas State Penitentiary He killed Jeff Nicholson and two others at an infirmary in 1928 His case spanned years of legal fights before the chair’s two shocks ended the proceedings No Crawford County relatives attended and he was the oldest Arkansas inmate executed by electrocution.
In New Orleans a 48 year missing person case ends as Mary Hortense Smith is located by family via a newspaper advertisement. She reported living at 1002 Harrison Street Denver Colorado and wished to communicate. Her brother, a New Orleans real estate operator, said she disappeared 48 years ago after family objections to her marriage plans.
Aug 15 Cleveland. The home of Raymond Porello, linked to rival brothers in Cleveland's corn sugar trade, was destroyed by a gas explosion. Police flag arson risk. five Porello brothers mentioned. Porello survived, family safe at mother’s home. Fire officials estimate losses at $26,000. Joe Porello and a bodyguard were slain recently.

Carroll County Mississippi warns of water scarcity and failing livestock. Morehouse Parish Louisiana seeks bank and merchant aid for 3,200 families. Webster County Arkansas notes authorities cannot fund further advances for 2,500 families.
Charles M. Mitchell of Monroe was named Grande Chef de Gare, the highest office of the Louisiana grand volture of Forty and Eight, at the annual convention in New Orleans. The election was unanimous and Mitchell, a Springfield Mo. native educated there, has lived in Monroe for about 20 years while working in railroads.
A morning blaze in Arkadelphia Ark destroyed the Arkadelphia Siftings Herald plant the Citizens National Bank and a grocery and news stand. The fire began in the newsstand caused major loss estimated at 150000. The Siftings Herald plans to resume with another publisher and rebuild the plant.
In Cedar Glades Arkansas Dave Golden 26 was arrested on charges of dashing gasoline on John Cutler 24 and setting it ablaze. Cutler died at Hot Springs after the attack following a quarrel earlier in the day. Officials guarded Golden amid fears of mob violence as details emerged.
Mrs. Phoebe Omlie, Memphis entrant in the Dixie Derby and noted flier, was saved from serious injuries when her Laird biplane nosed over at Municipal field. A safety belt restrained her as she practiced landings before the Chicago relay races in which she and a friend will compete.
Harney M. McGehee, former evangelist actor and teacher, was disbarred before the primary but won the fifteenth district prosecuting attorney race with a strong plurality in final returns.
The Texas oil industry launches its first statewide curtailment to curb waste from above-ground storage. The Railroad Commission issued an order limiting state production to 750000 barrels daily, effective August 27, with a two week protest window. Affected areas exclude southwest Texas gulf coast and west Texas.
