Louisiana to Pay $2 Tuition Grants to 13,000 Pupils
Vice chairman Lantz Womack said the Louisiana Financial Assistance Commission expects to pay $2 daily tuition grants to about 13,000 private school pupils this year. The grants, for a 180 day year, would cost $4,680,009, about $300,000 above funds available. The commission has $3,600,000 yearly from the two cent sales tax and started the fiscal year with a $770,000 surplus. The agency may add 2-3 more private schools and might see Zachry in East Baton Rouge Parish join the program as a desegregation plan begins this fall. Baton Rouge’s first nonprofit private school, Baton Rouge foundation, is set to enter its second year with 125 pupils. The commission is chaired by Sen. F. E. Gravelet Jr. and directed by James D. Fountain.

The bale grown by Leo Thompson of Calhoun weighed 548 pounds, ginned by Standard Gin Co. and graded middling. Display begins Thursday at 9 a.m. with clothing and related products nearby. A special registration contest will accompany the sale and a public is invited.
