Governor Smith told Rev. John Roach Straton he will not debate his public career unless the event is held in Calvary Baptist Church New York City. The letter insists the offer be accepted with conditions or the matter is closed.
The 89 year old ruler of Liechtenstein governs about 11 000 subjects with help from three policemen. If he lives and reigns two more years he would have surpassed the longest reigning sovereign in history.
City Judge W M Harper disposed seventy one Monroe cases in a single day the largest number ever tried in the city court. Sixty one convictions were recorded with ten discharged. Several defendants faced fines for speeding left turns traffic signals and overcrowding in the driver's seat.

State Senator Thomas B. Love of Dallas who backed Hoover for president withdraws from the Democratic nomination race for lieutenant governor in Texas. He says he cannot defeat Lieutenant Governor Barry Miller in the run off primary on August 25. Miller pledged support to Governor Alfred E. Smith.
Firemen in Port Arthur Texas brought under control a blaze that destroyed a new cold treating plant of a Texas company refinery. Loss estimated about 1 million dollars with no fatalities or serious injuries reported. The plant replaced one lost to fire last February. cause of the explosion remains undetermined.
A sheriff raid on the Billyn aire cafe outside New Orleans uncovered race horse bet records form sheets and quotations. Officers stormed a negro shack nearby to seize hidden evidence after a tip. Callers from bettors used many telephones during the operation. The raid follows militia actions against two gambling clubs in St Bernard parish.
President Coolidge approved a Mississippi flood control board report aligning with General Jadwin's plan. It calls for raising main-levee height by three feet and using floodways and spillways to curb inundation, while preserving river flow and considering backwater reclamation.
