In the Picardy front the French reportedly captured Lassigny this morning though unconfirmed. General Hubert's forces advance toward Noyon while Chaulnes-Roye road defenses slow the attack as Rawlinson's line faces stiff resistance along the front.
In France on August 14, reports say the German retreat began after a new French push. General Humbert’s forces advanced two miles and captured St Claude farm securing the southeastern Thiescourt plateau. At Plemont the Germans held against strong resistance after losing the town earlier in June.
In France on August 14 the British Army reports no change in the Somme battlefront aside from intensified artillery fire suggesting the enemy is massing more guns for the assault.
Paris reports only artillery active overnight between the Avre and the Oise. Germans raided along the Vesle where French and American troops hold posts but made no gains. French forces captured prisoners in a Champagne raid.

Four cars were searched twelve men arrested and about 600 pints and quarts of liquor seized at Rawls Arkansas across the Louisiana line Saturday night and Sunday in a push to enforce the Reed amendment. Arrested men were taken to Pine Bluff and posted bond. the liquor is said to have originated in Monroe.
The J H Scruggs Construction Company completed the reinforced concrete bridge over Bayou DeSiard at Phillips crossing near Monroe and the Police Jury formally accepted it. Parish Engineer Boyd approved the structure and officials called it a fine piece of work.
Captain R. M. Means of the 7th Field Artillery U S A brother of Rev E K Means of this city was wounded in action July 19 Captain Means had served as a physician at Lexington Kentucky.
A Stockholm source relayed to Washington states Germany has issued an ultimatum to Finland demanding the Finnish army prepare to march against Entente forces on the Murman coast within two weeks.
New Orleans on August 14 reported that the ordinance barring bread sales or deliveries from midnight Saturday to midnight Sunday passed favorably in council. The master bakers association backed the measure and only one protest was received from a baker who claimed no delivery duties during the restricted hours.
The city registrar warns that registration closes next Friday for the August 20 election on commission government under the Powell bill. As of this morning 569 residents had registered while expectations of a late push for the Powell plan remain muted. The law allows another election within 90 days if the plan fails, requiring 25 percent of qualified voters to petition.
A German submarine approached New York Harbor and sank the oil tanker Frederick R. Kellogg off Ambrose Channel. Several crew members are missing after the attack last night.
Jamey Oakland secretary of the Monroe Labor Club says about 95 percent of the 45 attendees opposed endorsing the Powell plan for Monroe commission government. The club will invite May candidates to speak, and Roark of Vernon Parish spoke last Sunday. The club may follow the state club on endorsing U S senator Hall.
Dr A H Gladden of this city has been notified from Washington that he is accepted for military service and will receive a commission soon in the Medical Reserve Corps. He awaits active duty orders and previously sought overseas service after a successful examination. His son Dr A H Gladden Jr is serving in France.
Washington Aug 14 Registration on August 24 will enroll all youths who turned 21 since June 6, last. The move, by Provost Marshal General Crowder, aims to speed Class 1 calls for September. About 150000 are expected to register, with most likely entering service within a month after recording.
London reports 8620 British Army casualties for the week ending today. The tally covers battle losses and non battle deaths, with officials detailing overall impact on forces and ongoing operations.
During the early days of the offensive a party of five Canadians captured more than 100 German soldiers in Pi cardy. In fog they surprised a fully manned trench and fired to force surrender. The captives were marched to the rear.

General March reports the 131st Infantry of the U S Division fought north of the Somme and helped repulse a counter attack at Chipilly. The regiment alone captured three officers and 150 men and seven guns. The Picardy salient has been trimmed, with no enemy near Paris, and Finnette on the Vesle front has been recaptured. No American troops have landed in Siberia.
Food Administrator Hoover released Louisiana second and third sugars for general consumption. He sent telegrams to federal food administrators directing manufacturers to buy these grades at 125 pounds per 190 pound sugar certificate.
Three months after Brest-Litovsk the only German goods seen in Russian markets were chemicals in Petrograd. A few specimens of German tin ware and cutlery appeared in stores in June.
