Kenneth Lewis of Monroe is the father of a seven pound 11 ounce girl Cheryll Lynn born Wednesday. Grandparents Mr and Mrs T E Fuller and Mrs Lucy Jane Dupree. Great grandfather Mr A H Gerson all of Monroe.
Rep. Wayne L. Hays of Ohio announces withdrawal from reelection citing health problems and harassment from coverage of his relationship with Elizabeth Ray. He will leave office when his term ends in January after serving as former House Administration Committee chair.
An FPC administrative law judge urged the Justice Department investigate Gulf Oil Corp and Texas Eastern Transmission Corp for possible criminal conspiracy over missing interstate gas deliveries. The 1963 certificate authorized 44 trillion cubic feet to be sold to Texas Eastern with daily volumes, but Gulf reportedly delivered none. The decision notes inaction by Texas Eastern and calls for possible criminal action pending FPC review.
Ouachita Parish voters prepare for a Saturday election with both primary rules in effect across 54 polling sites in 10 wards. Precinct changes include new Precinct 4 in Ward 1 at River Oaks School and Precinct 15 in Ward 10 at Lakeshore Elementary. The congressional race features only Democratic voters with Passman facing Huckaby, while Spooner leads the Republican slate. Absentee ballots totaled 348. registration and address changes handled at the parish courthouse.
In Chalmette Louisiana a 30 story refinery tower blast at Tenneco Oil Co. and Delta Field Erection Co. kills twelve workers and injures ten. The cause is unknown with welding or a gas leak suspected. 12th body recovered as search continues.
Monroe recreation centers will shut for two weeks starting Monday to allow staff vacation time before school. City parks and golf courses stay open. To reserve Chennault Park pavillions contact Tony Lewis. Forsythe Park handball courts by contacting the park. Normal schedule resumes after the two weeks.
