A three hour tank and artillery battle along the Syrian Israeli border ended in midafternoon after intervention by the UN truce organization. Syrian and Israeli planes were seen over the area as the fighting ceased.
A Syrian army spokesman said Israel initiated fire near the demilitarized zone injuring four soldiers and two civilians. Heavy artillery losses to enemy gun positions followed as Israeli tanks and machine guns targeted Syrian positions near headwater diversions of the Jordan River. The clash underscored mounting tension over an Arab canal plan across the Syrian border to Jordan.
SAIGON UPI A US Navy A4 Skyhawk was downed about 50 miles south southwest of Hanoi by a Soviet supplied SAM. A second Skyhawk was crippled in the blast. The pilot limped to the carrier Midway and made a night landing with fuel streaming from a shattered wing. In Duc Co Westmoreland visited amid mortar fire. no casualties reported.
New York AP reports selective service boards in 13 of 20 states plan to review student deferments and require transcripts as draft calls surge to 35 000 by November. Officials say campuses may be targeted if students’ grades and course loads are not substantial. Baton Rouge AP Louisiana Mineral Board opened bids for 214 840 acres of oil and gas leases in inland and offshore areas. The sale aims to add to the State Treasury with mineral bonus money, following a last fiscal year haul of about 30 million dollars. The new bids cover 205 483 inland acres, 9 357 offshore acres, and 1 858 acres from state agencies.
Washington AP reports Congress ends its initial cooperation with Secretary McNamara on defense matters. A House subcommittee killed the Army reserves merger despite his push, calling it harmful to combat readiness. Meanwhile the Senate OKed an $1 billion military pay bill, exceeding McNamara's target, with the House expected to follow.
A Navy hurricane hunter aircraft departed Jacksonville for another look at an easterly Caribbean wave. Forecasters said storm development remained remote, while above normal showers persisted in the northwest Caribbean and northwest Gulf of Mexico. Conditions were unfavorable for development for at least two days.
Louisiana plans a September start for a state literacy program to lower illiteracy rates. A 15 member committee and State Superintendent William J. Dodd outlined plans in New Orleans. Local superintendents will administer voluntary tests at schools. Whetstone urged expanding adult education with a higher appropriation and noted census illiteracy figures may exaggerate the issue.

DeRidder resident Jesse Whittington, 46, died after his car fell on him while he worked beneath it. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Beauregard Memorial Hospital. Whittington was employed by the Louisiana Forestry Commission.
Attorneys for two Monroe Negro children filed in federal court to require a desegregation plan or halt a $6 million school bond sale. The motion seeks a plan by opening of the next school session, with bond delivery in New York in 60 days. Six lawyers from Monroe and other cities represent the plaintiffs and aim to end compulsory segregation in the city schools.
Baton Rouge AP reports revised plans for a $65,000 exhibit building on the Yambilee Festival grounds in Opelousas won approval from the State Bond and Building Commission. The approval requires the building to be usable by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture as well.
