Rail labor unrest spreads as Big Four transportation unions threaten walkouts if guards and troops remain at terminals. Strikes risk paralyzing lines from California to Missouri with fatalities, injunctions restraining scab notices, and talks for emergency government control of railroads.
Two hundred transportation magnates from the nation’s biggest railroads gathered at Grand Central to vote on President Harding’s peace proposal for the shopmen’s strike. Eastern lines oppose returning workers with seniority rights to Labor Board decision. western and southern lines favor ratification to end the strike and restore normal operations. Officials say a majority may take hours to draft a reply as factions form and votes are delayed into the afternoon.
Railroads including the Vicksburg Shreveport Pacific and Missouri Pacific report freight curtailment and car unserviceability at Monroe, depressing city shipments. July merchandise totals fall from June as labor shortages delay repairs. Grayling Lumber notes car scarcity for inland orders, while Holly Ridge Lumber reports no current car difficulties and steady shipping.

Visitors from across the state fill Monroe for the fifth annual Louisiana Baptist Encampment on its second day. The program features sunrise services, talks on Parliamentary Law, Bible study plans, and addresses by Dr. H. L. Winburn and others at the Baptist tabernacle.
City county and federal authorities investigate an attempted bombing of a dining car in Frisco yards used for feeding workers. No injuries. trainmaster John Kennly said more than 100 employees were due in the car soon after the blast. A box car roof was damaged by the missile.

Bishop John Kilgo of the Methodist Episcopal Church South died at his Charlotte home after an extended illness that began last spring following the Southern Methodist General Conference. Elected a bishop in 1910, he retired at Hot Springs due to age and health, was brought home in the private car of Fairfax Harrison, and died after a renewed heart attack with doctors losing hope at ten o'clock last night.
