An integrated East Side Detroit neighborhood erupted for 90 minutes with brawling between three Negroes and police, rock throwing and tense scenes as Lansing experienced a calmer night after two days of racial trouble.
Detroit police cancelled all leave and used 150 officers to break up a 200-person crowd on the near east side after youths were ticketed for loitering. Three men faced riot incitement charges as fires burned vacant houses and 15 people were injured in the ensuing disturbances.
Washington UPI reports bakers urged reform amid bread price hikes as House agriculture subcommittee questions industry groups. Witnesses said farmers bear little blame while costs and margins split bread price. questions rise over wasteful practices and consign ment selling. Police faced a melee in a neighborhood disturbance as officers confronted residents during the daylong event.
Gov. John McKeithen will speak at the 19th annual Louisiana Forestry Association meeting in Alexandria September 14 15. Other speakers include Lloyd Blackwell Jim Altman and Dr Bernard Sliger. A nine hole golf tournament kicks off events at Rapides Golf and Country Club with director meetings at the Bentley Hotel. The second day features a general membership meeting and a 9 30 a m technical session in Convention Hall with a special program for women.
The parents of Marine lance corporal Norman E F Decereaux Jr. 19 said they received a government telegram confirming his death from a hand grenade blast at Chu Lia He was to be sent home on a 30 day leave in two weeks.
Civil rights leaders postponed a planned open housing march into the all white Bogan area on Chicago's Southwest Side and shifted to an unspecified location. A news conference was set for Warren Avenue Congregational Church with a possible later return to Bogan, Friday, weekend, or month.
Seven Americans returning from Cambodia say Prince Norodom Sihanouk remains neutral in the Vietnam conflict and seeks to prevent Communist troops from using Cambodia as sanctuary. They report limited border movements, no proof of a sanctuary, and note Cambodian forces patrol borders and villages.
United Press International reports violence and civil rights tensions across Mississippi and Michigan. In Lansing Molotov cocktails were thrown at a building in the Negro section after white youths threatened arson. Grenada saw demonstrators attacked by white teens with rocks bottles and firecrackers. In Jackson MLK Jr. SCLC endorsed mixed power and decided to admit whites to the previously all Negro executive board.
In Little Rock Arkansas Jim Johnson emerged as the Democratic gubernatorial candidate after defeating a racial moderate in the runoff. The result sets up a general election contest with his platform and stance on segregation.
In Chicago civil rights leaders canceled an open housing march into an all white neighborhood and postponed another planned march into Cicero. In Cicero New Jersey white suburban residents fear Negro influx would erode property values. A grand jury indicted 31 people for looting during the July riots. In Detroit twelve youths disrupted a police car, sparking two hours of rock throwing by about 200 African Americans.
The Quechan Indian tribe asks President Johnson to veto the boundary agreement approved by Congress, arguing it would cede about 2,000 acres they claim. A tribe spokesman said the resolution sent to the White House embodies the tribe’s clear stand against the pact.
