London Aug 10 The important town of Montdidier at the apex of the German Somme salient has been captured by the Allies. By 9 oclock this morning Montdidier had been surrounded. Only a small number of Germans with machine guns remained inside the town.
London reports 24,000 prisoners captured from the Germans in Picardy, with 100 more German guns seized by Allied forces, official confirmation noted today.
American forces joined the fighting in the Amiens Somme area aiding the British assault last night between the Ancre and the Somme. American machine gunners and infantry fought the Germans with enthusiasm, overcoming stiff resistance as Americans, British and French drive the enemy back along the line.
London reports French forces push the line about 16 miles southeast toward Montdidier with a four mile gain in six hours. Chaulnes junction now under British guns and French capture of 100 more guns plus 200 previously taken. Analysts expect a 20 mile retreat to the Somme canal as Allied progress continues with tanks and armored cars advancing.
British forces report a retreating German army along the Picardy battle line with decisive center pressure. Brisk fighting nets the towns of War Villers Viely Folies Rosieres and Vauvillers while a German division headquarters and staff fall into Allied hands. German transports continue moving eastward.

Information received in London shortly before 2 o'clock this afternoon stated that the French line was still advancing on both sides of Montdidier as forces push forward on the battlefield in World War I era reporting.
French troops launched a dawn assault and pushed their line about four miles by 10 a m along a 16 mile front between Montdidier and the Oise river. The advance extended through Averelles Piennes Hesons sur Matz and Vignemont shifting Montdidier behind the new line.
London reports Lieutenant Commander Schweiger, who commanded the submarine that sank the Lusitania, died last September when his submarine was lost. The death confirms earlier reports of his demise connected to the ship disaster.
The U S casualty report lists 211 missing in action. Included from Louisiana are Private Bennet New Orleans Private Willie D Eubanks Charville La Sergeant Vivian Long Coushatta La and Private Allen Bahib New Orleans.
Washington August 10 a main corps casualty list issued today shows 2% names. The fatalities include 11 killed in action and 5 died of wounds. Wounded severely total 9.
A majority of Monroe City Council members favor the Powell bill to adopt a commission form of government. Councilmen Austin, Walker, Culpepper and Slack endorsed the plan and said they would vote for it in the August 20 election. Atkins and Powers were noncommittal.
William Kellogg former governor of Louisiana died at his Washington home today. The obituary notes his prominent state leadership and later life in the capital. The article also discusses local politics on commission government with remarks from Mayor Apgar and council members about the Powell bill and possible voter support.
London reports the present offensive has seized nearly 140 German guns amid heavy German casualties and rising prisoner counts. Allied losses include all killed wounded and missing totaling under 6,000, with German casualties described as tremendous.
Two West Monroe homes owned by G. L. Mills and C. H. Mills burned around noon. R. W. Witt and Asa Cash occupied them. Mrs. Witt burned severely pulling a machine from the blaze. Loss estimated at 2500 with 1660 insured. Witt had no insurance. Fire started in a Witt closet. rats suspected as initiators.
London reports the Franco British push in Picardy worsened HMNs position as the line from Rheims to Flanders tightens. General March says the war won’t end yet and urges continued Allied pressure to prevent enemy rest and readjustment while heightened American forces are mobilized.
A closet fire ignited wallpaper storage as houses near the river burned. Sparks set nearby structures alight but were later put out. The alarm spread to Monroe as the blaze crossed the river toward the shingle mill premises soon after noon.
Major Tom McGuire remains in serious condition following a stroke of paralysis several days ago. He lives with his sons at Travelers Test and is described as very old, drawing concern from friends.
A merchants meeting discussed curtailing deliveries to one per route daily as government requests. A three member committee Clark Faulk Marshall Mun holland and Major D. A. Haas will canvass city merchants and report later. Attendance was not large.
Aug 10 Peeblin reports Sinn Feiners raid farmers taking shotguns while police seize guns to keep them from Sinn Feiners. Farmers fear crop destruction by birds and game and plan to appeal to government for help.
