Washington Aug 9 John Cudahy American ambassador to Belgium was publicly reprimanded by the state department for a London interview on Belgian food and the German occupation. Sumner Welles said Cudahy had been recalled to the United States immediately for consultation as directed by President Roosevelt.
Monroe residents were urged to back their library to prevent closure amid funding concerns. Community leaders argued sustained support is needed to keep the library open and serving residents.
In Ocala Florida a mother who came to city jail to free her 13 year old son on bicycle theft charges found his body hanging from a belt looped to a cell window. Desk Sergeant J F Williams said the youth Carl Holmes had asked for funny papers to read before the discovery by the mother and Policeman Kenneth Alverez. He could not explain the death.
The air war overview shows Britain warned of larger attacks as 800 Nazi planes pound shipping and towns. Britain claims 53 German planes downed and 100 fliers killed. RAF targets German bases as the nation braces for a possible invasion. Egypt reports Italian troop moves on the Libyan frontier with calm but cancelled leaves, pledging to stay out unless attacked. Hyde Park N Y Aug 9 The temporary White House announced President Roosevelt approved a 150 million non mandatory loan on the 1940 cotton crop to be handled by the Commodity Credit Corporation. The loan rate will be set later in Washington under the 1938 Agricultural Adjustment Act. He also signed a bill increasing CCC resources from 900 million to 1.4 billion to back mandatory loans for corn cotton and wheat under the 1939 AAA Act to meet wartime marketing emergencies.
The Colorado Republican assembly unanimously nominated Governor Ralph L. Carr for a second term. Secretary of State George E. Saunders and Denver district attorney John A. Carroll would compete in the September 10 primary for the Democratic nomination.
The register closes Saturday for voters who haven’t registered since January 2, 1938 or who have turned 21 since then to cast ballots in September.
Secretary Morgenthau urged Congress to pass an excess profits tax to raise funds and better distribute defense costs. Robert Burgunder, 23, former college orator, was executed in the gas chamber at the Arizona State Prison. He confessed to the killings of E. B. Peterson and Ellis M. Koury near Florence, Arizona, on April 29, 1939, and died at 5 10 a.m. seven minutes after entering the chamber.
