A Ruston man W. F. Mahaffey, 58, died after his flaming pickup struck a rear of Gad Dis Walley’s truck on U. S. 171 near Deridder. Walley escaped injury as bystanders fought flames. no skid marks noted. Mahaffey to Lake Charles. funeral in Atlanta, Texas. Surviving widow, one son, three daughters, five brothers and two sisters.
In Rovigo Italy Gino Bergantin and Giovannina Mancin were fined 10 000 lire each after a court in Cavazzere found them guilty of obscenity for stealing a kiss on a dance floor. A Rome court recently jailed two lovers for a goodbye kiss at a streetcar stop.
Eleven Ouachita chapter members and other youths will travel to Lake Charles August 10 to 13 for the Louisiana State DeMolay Conclave at the Charleston Hotel. Henry Makow aged 11 will become the News Star’s youngest columnist. He plans a Friday column offering parental advice based on his view of children’s problems. Henry says he can understand kids and aims to write about concerns of parents. He is eager and confident in his role.
A street survey across the United States shows Americans split by emotion as Maj. Gherman Titov circles the earth 17 times in about 25 hours. Reactions range from fear amazement and doubt to reluctant congratulations and a belief the U S will eventually lead in space.
Khrushchev urged honest negotiation on Berlin drawing skeptical reaction from congressional and diplomatic sources. U S experts found little new in his plan and the White House may comment after translation study. State Department silent. officials expect Berlin talks late this year with possible concessions yet to be defined. Fulbright called Khrushchev more positive, but not sure the basis for negotiations.
Monroe officials led by Mayor W L Howard depart for Memphis to prep for the Southern conference. The executive committee will meet to draft resolutions and bylaws with attorneys present. City officials coordinate registrations and reimburse city expenses from conference fees.
Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona will become a Morning World columnist starting next Wednesday with thrice weekly editorials. Born January 1, 1909 in Phoenix he married Margaret Johnson on September 22, 1934 and has three children. He served as a pilot during World War II from 1941 to 1945.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk travels to Paris to urge NATO allies, including a push to boost the alliance's European shield with 75,000 to 80,000 additional troops and support, ahead of possible U.S.-Soviet showdown over Germany and West Berlin. He will brief the NATO permanent council after meetings with Home, Couve de Murville, and von Brentano.
The Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov reports his spacecraft completed 17 earth orbits and remains in good working order. He says weightlessness is good for work but admits homesickness for solid ground and mother earth while praising Khrushchev for prioritizing safety in long missions.
Fifty men, many with sticks, entered Sara Delano Roosevelt Park in the Lower East Side and clashed with police. Patrolman Joseph Sheldorter knocked down a man and fired a warning shot. Clifford Barnes, 23, was charged with felonious assault. Three others were charged with disorderly conduct. Sheldorfer was treated for bruises and returned to duty.
Six year old John McKenzie of 117 Masonic Avenue Monroe is hospitalized in Greenville Mississippi General Hospital with paralytic polio. He spent time in an iron lung and doctors say it is too early to judge permanent effects. The boy’s father is deceased.
A London school magazine poll finds teenage girls favor restoring the military draft more than boys. One girl comments that military service "does them good" as part of the survey coverage.

Dr. Max M. Funderburk told a Northeast State Parent-Teacher Workshop that water fluoridation is a proven health measure facing opposition from a small group. He warned that dental decay is widespread, costly, and disfiguring, with more than 97 million Americans needing treatment and the average high school graduate losing about ten teeth to decay.
The Monroe area expected thundershowers yesterday but the forecast remained partly cloudy and warm. Temperatures should reach 88 to 92 this afternoon and tomorrow with lows from 68 to 75. yesterday's high was 90 and low 67.

At Buckley Field near Denver a 58 ton steel and concrete silo door slammed shut during Titan missile construction. Five workmen were killed and eight injured. two bodies recovered and two men trapped. Causes include hydraulic or cable failure. Names reported include Jerry Brando and George Graham.
