British and French forces opened an early morning assault in Picardy and east of Amiens. Advancing on a wide front under General Haig, the Fourth Army and the First Army moved at dawn and have taken numerous villages with reports of progress “going fine.”
At 5 A M on August 8 French and British troops opened an offensive southeast of Amiens. The action, described as developing under favorable conditions, was officially announced this morning.
In the offensive on the front east of Amiens today the British have taken Slahner wood and Dodo wood and probably possess Mareeleave and Lamotte-en-Loutre. The engagement was reported by the Associated Press from the British Army in France.
Combined French and British assaults launch at dawn along the Albert to Montdidier line. Initial reports say progress is satisfactory despite stiff enemy resistance.
Washington reports as of early today that no American division is known to be involved in the Franco British thrust south and southeast of Amiens.

Reports from Paris indicate the British Franco offensive progressed favorably by mid afternoon. The average advance reached about 2.5 miles on a front slightly over 25 miles. The attack caught the Germans by surprise and many prisoners were taken.
London reports this afternoon say Allied forces have captured multiple towns including Moreuil Demuin Ablancourt and Morlancourt as part of ongoing operations in the sector.
A Lokal Anzeiger Berlin dispatch reports the Russian government issued a declaration of war between England and Russia, printed with reserve amid conflicting cues and August date references.
The Federal Trade Commission asked the President to acquire all major stock yards cold storage plants warehouses refrigerator cars and cattle cars to break up a monopoly it says exists. The recommendation aims to place key transportation and storage facilities under government control to promote competition.

Washington August 8 Representatives of press associations and Washington newspaper correspondents were invited by Postmaster General Burleson to a Monday conference. The goal is to discuss efficient facilities for the press under government control of telephone and telegraph lines.
The American army casualty list issued today shows 247 names with 191 killed in action and 62 severely wounded. Private Nick Gonzales of Lakeland Louisiana was reported killed in action.
Washington releases a casualty list showing 10 percent named with actions including killed in action and wounded statuses. Sergeant Michael J. Stiller of New Orleans is listed as wounded in a degree undetermined.
The Navy Department states extending the draft to the Navy is unnecessary at present. It says the Navy has enough personnel and enlistments around 10 000, with army draft age limits not affecting Navy enlistments.
A young Black man named Bubber Hall was hanged near Bastrop after a reported assault on Mrs. W. H. Todd, wife of a local attorney. Deputies lost custody as a mob seized Hall near the Todd residence, later killing him in a roadside execution. The incident followed Hall being captured earlier at Collinston Morehouse parish.
Ouachita parish selects 40 of 1917 Class 1 negro registrants and a majority of the 67 1918 registrants to meet a quota of one colored selectman. Exact entrainment date for Camp Pike to be announced later amid local trouble and a hanging case. Sheriff notes the guilty negro and reports Mrs. Todd recovering in Monroe.
Paris Aug 8 The German long range cannon continued its bombardment in the Paris region today as Allied defenses reported bombardments and counterfire. The ongoing shelling kept civilian areas on edge and military observers monitoring the affected zones.
Lake Charles reports 17 dead with more fatalities expected as commu nities confirm casualties from Tuesday's hurricane. Known deaths include nine at Lake Charles Sulphur three at Grand Lake two at Gerstner Field and two at DeQuincy. Aircraft losses at Gerstner Field appear lower than feared with many planes repairable and building damage deemed recoverable.
Faunt LeRoy and Ellis report a contract to erect three new buildings for Tom Sullivan at about 12000 dollars. Two houses rise on North Fourth between Hudson Lane and Stubbs Avenue, the third on North Third in the same block. Construction starts next week to meet rising housing demand and all units will be rented.
