Visit Ends In Tragedy Girl Drowns In Bayou De Siard
Linda Ruth Kelley 11, visiting her maternal grandfather Jimmy Thornhill in Ouachita Parish, slipped from an inner tube and drowned in Bayou De Siard near Edgewater Dam. Rescuers pulled her from the water, but she died about 6:50 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral set at Mudhearn Funeral Home. Survivors include mother Dollie Simmons and maternal grandparents, plus Baton Rouge and Galveston relatives.

Builders hail FHA down payment cut aiding buyers
W L Dean, president of the Northeast Louisiana Home Builders Association, welcomed reduced FHA down payment requirements. He said the change will help lower and middle income families in Monroe West Monroe and beyond to purchase new homes with affordable terms. Funeral Follows Bastrop Plane Crash Tragedy
Johnson family memorial service at Cherry Ridge Baptist Church drew about 750 mourners as six victims from a fatal Bastrop monoplane crash were laid to rest in Bastrop Memorial Cemetery. Relatives fainted during rites led by Rev. W. R. Rogers. a four mile funeral procession followed.

Police Jury Association Opens Monroe Headquarters
The Police Jury Association of Louisiana and the Parochial Employees' Retirement System moved their state headquarters to Monroe from Natchitoches. The shift brings over 1 million dollars in cash and bonds to Ouachita parish, with $250,000 annual growth projected for the Retirement System serving 62 parishes. In Bow Street London a 64 year old former sergeant Philip Kinghorn Burbidge was fined one pound two dollars and eighty cents after slapping Lord Altrincham a young peer who complained that the Queen speeches gave him neck pain. The magistrate Sir Laurence Duane showed sympathy to the defendant while saying the peer disgusted and offended loyal citizens. Burbidge remained angry but admitted expecting only a small fine for insulting behavior.

Coast Guard rushes aid to Gulf fishing boat Lois K
The 120 foot Lois K fishing vessel with 24 crew members reported taking on water near North Pass at the mouth of the Mississippi River.
