A southern bloc considers restoring the two thirds rule at the 1940 Democratic convention to block a Roosevelt third term. With northern support, they hope to wield a veto over renomination, leveraging a potential deadlock to slow any bid for a second term.
Aug 6 The blue forces retreat before superior brown troops along a 12 mile front near Black Creek in the lower Mississippi delta. About 30 000 troops in regular army national guard and reserves man positions as brown units attack with rifles artillery and planes using blank ammunition.

Sheriff Milton Coverdale announced a reward of 1 for the arrest and conviction of a burglar who entered the Bud Warner store at 24 Montgomery Avenue West Morrie Friday night. The intruder entered the room and shoplifted from the registers. Information on the case was to be kept confidential as officers pursued leads. Two suspects, Nick Charles and Sem Crawford, were linked to thefts at Otto Passmean's company on St John Street and were detained in Delphax, Texas, awaiting further action.
Werner Belchs died when his glider struck him after he bailed out during a storm near Wasserkuppe Germany. The incident followed an attempted altitude record reaching near seventeen thousand feet as other pilots landed safely. Lufthansa captain Walther Drechsel reported a separate sky record in Stettin earlier that day.
