Fred McElroy aged forty five died Sunday en route to Monroe after being struck on the head near the Claiborne school house by Seth Howard a seventeen year old. The incident followed an argument over logs at the McGee sawmill. Seth Howard was arrested and jailed.
Washington Aug 7 The new farm loan board which will organize the farm land bank system held its first meeting in the treasury department. It created 12 proposed federal land bank districts to issue first mortgage loans and plans to tour the country to gather farmers' views on bank locations and district boundaries. Cities named for potential banks include New Orleans Baltimore Columbus Oklahoma City Dallas Fort Worth Nashville Memphis Birmingham Montgomery and others. Secretary McAdoo chairs the board with C E Londell George W Norris W S A Smith and Herbert Quick as members.
Federal mediator Hanger announced after talks with the Switchmen's union of North America and railroads that both sides agreed to settle their differences by arbitration. The switchmen's dispute is described as separate from the four railroad brotherhoods.
Portland Maine April 7 The coast guard lookout on Cross Island sighted a submarine of undetermined nationality moving west It was believed to be either the Deutschland or the Bremen sighting reported this morning by the station.
In the twenty four hours ending at 10 o clock this morning forty four children died from infantile paralysis and 145 new cases were reported. Since the epidemic began there have been 5168 cases and 1148 deaths.
Philadelphia reports say workers at Philadelphia Rapid Transit are ordered to strike with 1800 strikers replaced by strikebreakers while schedules remain largely unchanged. Separate notes from New York indicate a predicted fire today as unions and companies weigh a tentative settlement plan.

In Seymour Texas on August 6 Sheriff W L Ellis aged 56 was felled by a blow from the handcuffed fists of Steven Brown a negro in custody and then shot with his own revolver which Brown seized. Ellis died within hours and Brown was killed by a mob as he tried to flee after the escape attempt.
Baltimore hosts the sixty second annual convention with welcomes to Mayor Preston and union leaders. President Marsden G. Scott responds as reports of officers are read. The gathering runs through the week with no elections. The Woman's Auxiliary also meets as about two thousand delegates and visitors attend from major U.S. and Canadian cities.
In Bangor Maine August 7 Republicans of the Fourth district plan a special convention to nominate a candidate for Congress to fill the vacancy after Representative Guernsey declined renomination to run for the Senate. The contenders are Hugo Clark Bangor Bertram Smith Patten and Ira G Hersey Portland House speaker and former Senate president.
A spectacular incendiary fire ripped through railroad yards near the Black Tom explosion site in Jersey City New Jersey destroying fifteen loaded freight cars. The blaze could be seen for miles fueling rumors that further explosives from Black Tom were at risk.
Philadelphia health authorities closed moving picture theatres to anyone under sixteen to curb infantile paralysis. In the last 24 hours two deaths and seven new cases raised totals to nineteen deaths and seventy nine cases since July 1.
