Destroyer Escort McGinty Launched at Orange
The destroyer escort U S S McGinty was launched on August 5 to honor Soundman Franklin Alexander McGinty a Georgia sailor who received the Navy Cross for heroic action during the Plymouth disaster in 1943. Sponsor Mrs. Henry T. Malone of Gadsden accompanied by McGinty family members attended the ceremony at Consolidated Steel yards. The ship was launched sideways at the Orange yard.

The Navy reports a Nazi U-boat was sunk by depth charges in the Atlantic by a coast guard manned destroyer escort and a French destroyer escort. First contact came from the Coast Guard vessel under Commander Ralph R. Curry of Alexandria Virginia. The sub was forced to surface and badly damaged before its crew became prisoners of war.

Accused Negro Found in Hospital in Alabama
Willie L. Richardson, 23, Negro, wanted for allegedly drafting and cashing bogus drafts, located in a veterans hospital at Tuskegee, Ala. A detainer is placed and he will be returned when able to leave. Drafts were drawn on P. P. Norman, Oak Ridge. Gail Patrick, movie actress, passed through Monroe aboard a Delta Air Lines plane at Selman Field. Miss Patrick flew westbound about 9:30 p.m. A recipe suggests adding 1-4 teaspoon grated orange rind to spice cake.

Death ends Cherry Sisters era in Cedar Rapids

Death at Illinois Central Station Ends After Heart Attack
Robert Washington a 41 year old Black man from Hodges plantation nine miles south of Delta died after a heart attack at the Illinois Central Passenger Station Friday night. Police and coroner officials said he came with his wife seeking charity hospital treatment and collapsed moments after stepping from the train.
