Soviet forces push from Belgorod toward Kharkov and from Orel toward Bryansk as Moscow hails the summer offensive. Red troops report rapid gains with tens of thousands captured and German defenses collapsing under renewed assaults.

Speaker Sam Rayburn Democrat Texas told East Texas Teachers College the United States has 28 million overseas and that the tally will be twice as strong at year end as at the close of 1942. He praised strides toward victory and defended price controls noting a 26 percent rise in living costs since war began.

The War Food Administration announced higher loan rates for 1943 grown cotton. Base rate moves from 1.262 to 1.928 cents per pound gross for 15 16 inch middling grade. Net weight loans set at 2.006 cents per pound, varying by region to reflect transport and handling costs.
The Swedish government under King Gustaf V will halt transit of German troops and war materiel through Sweden. Swedes welcomed the move as a precaution after WWII threats, noting Sweden’s 400000 strong army and 24 hour defenses. Two public school superintendents T O Brown of Ouachita parish and E L Neville of the city announce the fall term for both systems will begin Monday September 20 The delay comes after wartime cotton harvest difficulties and to aid students who may be needed to pick cotton This reopening date is about a week later than usual.
Staff Sergeant Wayne R. Walker of Logansport Indiana aided six Alexandrian teens after an automobile overturned into a creek near Fishville on June 16. Walker freed five captives within four minutes and helped a sixth escape. he was aided by Staff Sergeant Charlies E Heater and two 38th division MPs.
Swiss reports from Aug 6 say Italy moves to crush the Fascist structure amid war news. A royal decree dissolves the party grand council and Chamber of Corporations, removes symbols, rebrands leadership, and orders liquidation of party assets. The cabinet gave no sign Badoglio seeks peace despite calls for restoring Italy’s honor and peace.
The derailment of a northbound Atlantic Coast Line passenger train near Bartow Florida killed the engineer J E Mimms of Lakeland and injured two trainmen. Fireman Jackson Green and helper Ben Kinchen suffered burns and bruises. A British report said seven American soldiers drowned in a barge accident off the west of England.
Private Walter J. Bohn, 26, of Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania, convicted of rape, larceny and housebreaking, was hanged at Camp Claiborne early today in what officials call the first wartime execution in the camp area. His death sentence, reviewed by the Eighth Service Command and approved by President Roosevelt, followed a January 1943 attack on a young Alexandria housewife. About 30 to 35 witnesses attended under guard protection as Bohn prayed aloud before the trap.
In Louisiana on August 6, 23 year old Ray Holstead died instantly when a watermelon truck wrecked near Alexandria at 3 am. Davis Whitman was severely injured and taken to an Alexandria hospital. Holstead's body was removed by Hien Funeral Home. Survived by mother Max M B Holstead and two brothers Rex in North Africa and Roy in San Diego.
In Vancouver Washington a riot followed a cafe fight leaving a soldier, a police patrolman and a civilian hospitalized. Eight civilians were jailed as police detained shipyard workers among others. The soldier suffered skull injuries after being struck by a nightstick. a tear gas shell injured an amusement company worker. the patrolman had tear gas burns. the soldier reportedly fought with law enforcement and flashed a knife during the scuffle.
The government sets September 15 as the filing deadline for estimated income and victory tax under the pay as you go act. About 15 million taxpayers face a binary choice between a short form or full forms for returns. The new short form covers incomes up to 10 000 dollars and a 2 percent withholding exception. Forms will be mailed to all eligible taxpayers with instructions and a simplified table.
