Paris reports German resistance north of the Vesle continues with determined guards on river heights. Analysts say the German position between the Vesle and Aisne is untenable and will not endure much longer. Allied forces maintain initiative as they push north of the Vesle and cross to the Avre near Motaviers.
German guns shelled the area north of Villers-Brettoneaux near Amiens. The enemy also fired gas shells into British lines last night on the front northeast of Amiens.
American forces advancing on the Vesle captured Fismes the German base, taking 17 guns and some enemy crews as AP reports from the frontline on Monday.
Germans along the opposite line west of Fismes used their guns freely in an apparent bid to halt American and French advances. Weather hampered German gunnery and their range finding was ineffective. They fired after dark, but the Americans replied with superior counterfire, advancing despite bombardment.
W. J. Bynum Jr who recently re signed as foreman at the VS and P shops here received a fine watch from fellow employes and a handsome timepiece from the black firemen at the V S and P in appreciation of his service.
W K Wingfield, Y M C A recruiting officer for the southern district based in San Antonio, visited Monroe yesterday and drew several locals toward overseas service with the Y M C A. James Nelson applied for Russia duty, another Monroe man filed a tentative application, and a third reportedly joined or considered. Wingfield may return to Monroe later per W L Ethridge, northeast Louisiana district recruiting chairman.
The Weather Bureau announced that the tropical disturbance approaching the gulf coast has been located but the exact point of contact is not yet determined.
The Department of Justice joins Monroe police in a vice crackdown after the arrest of Mrs. J. M. Ryles for conducting a disorderly house at 3808 Ouachita Avenue and the detention of Luice Ridings Pearl Jamer son alias Stringer and Esther Henderson. Henderson faces fighting and disturbing the peace charges while Ridings and Jamer son are held on vagrancy charges. A further charge of immoral house is filed against Mrs. Ryles. All cases set for 3 PM today. statements were taken from three women and their remarks may be used if they are arrested again. Police reported the Ryles house fight as sickening and questioned the women about military service connections.
Paris reports the continuation of the long range bombardment by German forces as of Aug 6, with artillery fire striking the city. The city endures renewed bombardment while defenses respond to the ongoing threat.
London reports an official announcement that allied naval and marine forces landed at Archangel on August 2. The event stirred widespread enthusiasm among the Russian people.
Washington reports the American army casualty list totals 358 names with 21 killed in action and 123 wounded severely. Louisiana entries include Corporal Fred Pace Cumpti severely wounded Private Joseph A Stegner Kolin severely wounded and Sergeant Elson Benoit Patterson wounded undetermined. Earlier, Lt. David J. Ewing New Orleans and Bennie Wiggins Wilhite Union Parish were listed as killed in action.
The Earl of Reading, Britain's ambassador to the United States, has arrived in London to confer with the British War cabinet, according to an announcement from New York dated August 6.
A meeting of organized labor is called for tonight at union headquarters in the Opera House building. James T. Tolson, vice president of the Labor Council, says the discussion will cover forming a non-partisan political body to address future labor issues. The plan’s relation to the Powell bill election was not stated. Also to be discussed are plans for Labor Day observance.
London Apr 6 More than 120 persons are missing from the torpedoed Warilda ambulance transport sunk in the English Channel Saturday by a German submarine. Most of the 650 survivors were sick and wounded soldiers.

Jefferson City Missouri August 6 voters in the general primaries express preferences for U S Senate representatives in Congress and county officers for November. The Democratic race centers on X P Wilfrey serving the unexpired term against former governor Joseph W Folk.
Only one of four members whose terms expire this year qualified for renomination in the September 16 primary. W. 2B. Inabnet, Ward 2, is the sole incumbent among R. O. Randle's list. Others slated for reelection are Head Ward 9, Trousdale Ward 10, and Renwick Ward 10, with two likely candidates.
Four people died and many more were prostrated as New York endured a severe heat wave. Officials urged precautions as temperatures rose and humidity remained high throughout the day.

July inspections by tick eradication forces in Ouachita parish found few ticky cattle despite many in certain communities. Dr W F Moore reports 3 949 herds totaling 25 250 cattle dipped. 695 cattle in 129 herds were ticky, with 80 of those in the targeted communities. Mules and horses also examined with most dipped. 718 inspected and 709 dipped, 2? ticky.
City council last night adopted an ordinance banning five ton plus loads on the traffic bridge. Mayor Apgar can pursue a loan to finance a Monroe water filtration plant. The Juvenile Protective Association requested $500 more for the probation officer’s work, with support from Judge Schulze and local officials.
The 1918 registrant will depart for Camp Hancock Georgia this afternoon. Two Ouachita white registrants leave at 4 45 to fill an uncompleted quota for Camp Hancock. It was unclear whether two 1917 registrants or one 1917 and one 1918 registrant would entrain. No 1918 registrants had been drafted here before, though some were expected.
