Westbrook Pegler denounces unions as inherently terrible and calls for releasing loyal delegates. He argues union authority surpasses government power and cites garment workers as example of political coercion and overseas payroll deductions.
Guy G. Gabrielson of New Jersey won the Republican National Committee chairmanship by 52 to 47 over Axel Beck, signaling a Taft-aligned shift. The vote edged past the earlier Dewey and Reece loyalties, with Taft backers aiding Gabrielson's narrow victory.
Northeast Junior College will continue bus transportation for the 1949 50 session from multiple North East Louisiana communities. An agreement with Rev R B Kitchingham, operator, secures low fares to aid commuter students. Routes include Wisner to Monroe and other towns with schedules set by student convenience. Ouachita Parish Coroner Dr. J. T. French will hold an inquest this afternoon at 2 p m into the death of Policeman George Pendarvis. His wife Ethel, 24, is jailed on murder investigation after admitting the slaying. She told a reporter she did not wish to attend the funeral. The officer’s funeral was held at Magnolia Cemetery near Tullos with Monroe police pallbearers.
The Senate threatened a multi million dollar penalty against France for alleged mistreatment of 37 Americans in French Morocco as it debated a foreign aid bill. Senators cited discrimination against ex soldiers who after the war sought business rights, while ECA control over funds remained a key issue.
Secretary of State Acheson blasted the Chinese Communists as tools of Russia and outlined five basic principles to guide U S policy toward China. He dismissed the Nationalist regime as a failure and warned of possible Communist advances with US support for China’s true independence.
Ensign Hugh H. Goodwin Jr. of Monroe Louisiana and Lt. (jg) Henry H. Bate of New Orleans were pilots in F6F Hellcat fighters that collided and crashed into Baffin Bay near Corpus Christi. Both crews are missing. an extensive search by navy helicopters and PBM seaplanes continues. Rear Admiral Hugh H. Goodwin travels to Corpus Christi to arrange funeral details.
Bullets from cowboy Herb Frizzell’s six gun killed rodeo judge Henry Preston Jones and Carl C. Myers, Abilene, president of the Hardin-Simmons University Rodeo Association. Sheriff Bob Wolf jailed Frizzell as witnesses recalled a deadly confrontation following an argument earlier in the night.
The army urges Congress to extend the draft law beyond June as insurance against a swift war. Joint Chiefs of Staff will review the matter with Lt General E H Brooks noting ground forces favor on book. Navy and air force undecided.
Nudists at the American Sun bathing Association annual convention near Denver donned clothes for a one night dramatic performance. Mary Kilgore, chairwoman, explained the switch while attendees described the scene and joked about clothing choices. The Echo Valley Club of Kansas City staged the show as part of a mix of social and convention business including volleyball.

Mitchell of the University of New Mexico speaks on homoeidoheterosemantopho noglosses a term for look alike spell alike words with different meanings across languages. He notes miles in English means distance but is Latin for soldier while jag in English sounds as I in Swedish and kind means children in German.
A car teetered off Winnsboro highway eight miles southeast of Monroe at 11:30 this morning. The deceased is identified as a man named Munce. his wife Edith Munce, 38, is seriously injured with multiple fractures and possible internal injuries. The other vehicle was a light truck driven by Fred Russell of Brookhaven. Russell said a left front tire blew out and the truck veered. Witnesses placed Munce’s speed near fifty mph. the sedan crashed into an embankment and treeged.
Chicago reports a nationwide corn crop exceeding three billion bushels for 1949. Estimates range from 3.56 to 3.75 billion, with last year’s all time high of 3.650 billion a ceiling Gramlich believes may be topped.
Senators pledged a wide probe into war time contracting fraud and waste involving army officers, government staff, and civilian contractors. Comptroller Warren reported about 1.165 billion in contract settlements with 11.5 million in irregularities and noted 2.34 million lost to improper payments in 388 settlements.
Seoul reports that about 6000 northern invaders were expelled from South Korea. Maj. Gen. Choi Byung Duk said the South’s forces suffered 100 dead and 90 wounded in yesterday’s Ongjin Peninsula clash. Two border positions in North Korea were briefly occupied before being retaken.
Ingrid Bergman announced plans to divorce Dr. Peter Lindstrom and quit movies. She hopes to marry Italian director Roberto Rossellini after the divorce and will file suit in Italy or Sweden. Her spokesman Joseph Steele said she aims for private life and may seek incompatibility as grounds.
Alabama Attorney General Albert A. Carmichael rejected a claim by Klan leader William Hugh Morris that Carmichael joined the Ku Klux Klan in Brewton in the 1920s. Morris, jailed for contempt and failing to produce records, alleged the investigation of hooded terrorism was a witch hunt and named Judge George Bailes and State Solicitor Emmett Perry as former Klansmen.
