Governor Richard W. Leche, along with Lorris Wimberley and George M. Wallace, visited Louisiana Tech in Ruston to discuss college expansion and meet with T. Ashley Wright. Senator Bertram Barnette joined the morning delegation as they toured the campus.
Mrs. A L Barton of Simpson died from bullet wounds after a man drove up to a truck carrying her and 10 others Sunday in Alexandria. Reginald McManus, 28, of Alco La, salesman, held in connection with the shooting, was moved for safety after unrest near Vernon parish jail. Sheriff W E Reid said McManus denied involvement and cited no motive.
Governor Richard W. Leche visited Monroe on Wednesday noon and dined at the Louisiana Training Institute. He was hosted by Superintendent Dillon and accompanied by legal adviser George Wallace and State Senator R. F. Barnette before continuing to Baton Rouge.
About 400 self-styled hunger marchers camped in the Illinois capital as Gov. Horner backs a plan to allot an additional 1,000,000 dollars monthly for relief. Legislators praise the move while marchers press six demands including a larger relief budget and plan to present them to a joint committee. Horner approves raising monthly relief to 5,000,000 dollars from general revenue.
The well dressed unidentified man, about 32, bound with hemp rope and shot, found in a dilapidated trunk on a Brooklyn lot. Nathan Berlin, a lumberyard worker, discovered the trunk while on his way to work and alerted police.
In Vicksburg Mississippi Mayor J Hamilton led the city administration ticket to a landslide re election. He drew 2380 votes to defeat former mayor and sheriff W J Hossley who had 885 votes. J M Buchanan and J J Williamson led for city commissioner while Frank Shanahan won the assessor nomination with a total exceeding his three rivals combined.
The first bale of Ouachita parish cotton from 1936 was ginned at Standard Gin at 9 am Wednesday. Grown on Hardtimes plantation by J. A. Cook for Biedenharn Realty, the Delta Pine Land No. 11 bale weighed 402 pounds. Ginning this season began about 19 days earlier than 1935, with army worms and boll weevil present but deemed controllable. Parish forecasts suggest one of the largest yields per acre in years, even on poorer hill lands. The first bale was placed in the Ouachita National Bank lobby for exhibition.
Theard, 48, a New Orleans attorney and notary, is under arrest charged with embezzling about 45,575 dollars from the Phoenix Building and Homestead association where he acted as attorney and notary. An affidavit by state bank commissioner J. S. Brock accuses him of stealing 44,575 dollars worth of Home Owners' Loan bonds during 1994 and 1935. Theard, who helped draft the 1932 homestead law, declined to comment. He formerly taught at Tulane law school. Gilbert J. Vincent Sr., president of Homestead, said the loss was found by the association’s auditor a week ago.

Claiborne Parish's first 1938 cotton bale arrived in Homer Louisiana on Monday afternoon. Frank Dance of Athens sold the 518 pound bale to F B King of Homer for 13 cents plus premiums totaling 31.50. The sale netted 92.65 and was bought by the Middlebrook Clin company of Athens. Davce expects to make 150 bales on 200 acres.
