Harold Whitey Dahl, a United States flyer who spent two years in a Spanish nationalist prison, married Eleanor Bone on July 26 in Belleville. He came to Canada last June and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, rising to flying officer. Eleanor Bone is the daughter of a former Belleville mayor. Dahl’s first wife helped win his release by appealing to General Franco.

The parish civilian defense council will set up nine air raid observation posts in Ouachita Parish and Monroe city. Thirty residents will register at the courthouse to serve, with posts located in Fondale Bosco Calhoun Sterlington and Monroe areas. Posts operate 24 hours in shifts under Dr R L Wood James Sparks Dr P M Gayle C B Braun and Joe Trammell.

A basement Seattle saloon crime spree ends with three dead and seven wounded, including the shooter. The gunman, who planned a robbery, briefly fought off two officers before bystanders subdued him. he confessed to intent to rob the club.
Washington reports government orders require rayon producers to earmark 10 percent of output for silk users hit by a defense command. Hosiery mills receive 70 percent of set aside rayon while 30 percent helps adjust affected customers or manufacturers using silk for non hosiery purposes. Retailers nationwide report strong demand and limits as the silk shortage continues.
The Ways and Means Committee rejected proposals to alter the 3.529 billion tax bill including joint return changes. President Roosevelt urged exemptions on earned income and revision of the joint filing rule but was rebuffed. Senate finance plans hearings contingent on House action as the measure would nearly triple taxes for many filers.
President Roosevelt refused to sign a defense highway program totaling 320 million dollars. He objected to distributing 125 million among states pro rata and to the loss of executive power to place funds where defense needs were greatest. The measure included 150 million for access roads to bases, 125 million for highway corrections, 25 million for war damage, 10 million for flight strips, and 110 million for planning.
The White House yacht Potomac left New London for a week to ten days at sea with President Roosevelt aboard. He relaxed in casual clothes and a battered hat and planned to fish read or nap as he pleased while the voyage was kept under tight secrecy.
Dr Charles Wooten Pipkin 41 LSU graduate school dean and political science authority died suddenly in New Orleans after arriving for observation. Born 1899 in Little Rock he held degrees from Henderson-Brown Vanderbilt and Oxford and served LSU since 1925. Funeral planned in Memphis with survivors including three sisters and two brothers.
The W. R. Aldrich Company of Baton Rouge is to start interior roads worth 178 534 50 dollars at Camp Polk with a 60 day completion window. McMichael Construction of Shreveport will build additional access roads for 82 796 dollars to finish in 90 days. C E Rabalais of Bunkie begins five chapels totaling 102 800 dollars, nine percent complete. Station laundry equipment is 98 percent installed as is the cold storage plant.
Governor W Lee O Daniel took the oath to serve as senator from Texas to fill the unexpired term of the late Morris Sheppard. He stated Texas law ends his term as governor.

At Fort Knox Kentucky a guardhouse riot left Private Carl B McClellan 19 of Bicknell Indiana dead after guards fired to quell 350 prisoners. Mil itary court will try the responsible guard for manslaughter after ballistic tests determine the fatal shooter.
Mrs Inez Merritt of Peru Nebraska survived a head on collision near Wesatch Utah after two Utah residents held the severed jugular closed with their fingers until a physician arrived at Evanston hospital. Deputy Sheriff Black and his wife stabilized the wound and kept her alive during the trip. Her condition was reported fairly good later.
