Plan for Final Vote on Tariff Upset by Wisconsin Senator
Washington August 3 Plans of Republican and Democratic leaders for a final vote on the tariff bill this month were upset by Senator Lenroot Republican of Wisconsin. Lenroot refused a unanimous consent that would bar debate on major changes in the bill. Senator Gooding Idaho proposed a probe into financial interests of seniors in affected industries and journalists linked to stores benefiting from the bill. Lenroot urged a ten minute limit and August 11 deadline. Senator Lodge objected saying no final vote time was set. Gooding asked that his resolution go to the contingent expenditures committee. Senator Harrison Mississippi sought immediate consideration but it was referred to the committee. Harrison added a second resolution barring personally interested senators from participating.
