Paris reports American leaders believe Western Europe could be fortified to resist a Russian strike if given months of renewed morale and military strength. Officials in London and across Western Europe warn Europe is near helpless without rapid rearmament as Korea’s war underscores the danger.
An American intelligence officer reports that no Red Korean officers above second lieutenant were captured. they reportedly kill themselves, a practice called Kara kiri. Soviet Delegate Jakob A. Malik failed in his first bid to remove Nationalist China as U N Security Council president. He stayed to trade bitter words with U S and Chinese delegates, accusing the United States of naked aggression in Korea and Southeast Asia and signaling Russia’s return in the August term.
A U S Fifth Air Force account from Korea notes North Korean troops storm Kumchon while American forces withdraw. Firestorms engulf western Kumchon as engineers blow a railway bridge and the city burns, bringing North Korean gains within 30 miles of Taegu and 90 air miles from Pusan.

Belgium ended a week of near upheaval as workers resumed duties after protests sparked by King Leopold III’s plan to transfer royal powers to Crown Prince Baudouin. Spaak hailed the move as a victory while a special committee prepared a bill for delegation of powers to Baudouin.

A second draft call will occur later this month. those who have not had a pre induction physical in 120 days must take another exam. Washington reports the defense department to announce deferment policies for critical jobs within 24 hours with lists from commerce and labor departments to guide exemptions, though not guarantees.
The defense department listed 32 additional Americans wounded in action in Korea in casualty list No. 51 released yesterday. Four others were reported missing in action. no fatalities were reported. Missing included Corp. Frederick J. Kogel of New Orleans.
Four National Guard divisions and two regimental combat teams were called up for active duty. The 28th from Pennsylvania trains at Camp Atterbury Indiana, the 40th from California at Camp Cook California, the 43rd from Connecticut Vermont and Rhode Island at Camp Pickett Virginia, and the 45th from Oklahoma at Camp Polk Louisiana. The 196th from South Dakota goes to Camp Carson Colorado, and the 278th from Tennessee to Fort Devens Massachusetts.
