Finnish president designate Mannerheim is believed to have secured Russian assurances that Moscow would consider a new armistice application pledging Finland independence. The move follows his succession to Ryti and German broadcasters welcomed the leadership. Swedish intermediaries reportedly facilitated contact with Moscow.
Turkey severs diplomatic and economic relations with Germany with Britain and the United States backing. Ankara cites a wartime shift in policy as Finland’s leadership change and potential Finnish armistice influence hint at broader Soviet-UK alignments in the Balkans.

In Vicksburg Mississippi mayoral primary results J C Hamilton lost to R E Selby who led with 151 votes to 1 289. Hamilton had served since 1932. Aldermen Ernest Shefield and Joseph Garrett won their contests and County Tax Assessor Frank Shanahan was reelected.
Tokyo broadcast claims Rota has fallen as American forces press the Marianas drive with landings on Rota amid broader seizure of Tinian and Guam. Nimitz confirms Tinian fell after nine days of combat and captures include two airfields and a harbor.
In a historic transaction J. G. Durrett and R. D. Kellogg acquired the Monroe Furniture Company and affiliated stores. The purchase includes five Monroe branches, the American Furniture Co Shreveport, Southern Furniture Lake Charles, United Furniture Alexandria, Bastrop and Ruston units, the wholesale department, and the Supreme Bedding and Furniture Manufacturing factory in Monroe. Lester D. Scharff becomes general manager of the new company and its affiliates. The deal is estimated near three quarters of a million dollars. The same merchandising policies and emphasis on value, service, and friendliness will continue.
In a House of Commons address Churchill said the end of the Axis war may come sooner than he had anticipated. He cited global Allied advances, including Normandy, Tehran accord with Stalin, and Russian forces wearing down Germany, with optimism for swift victory yet caution to avoid false hopes.

In St Louis, 26 Republican governors meet with Thomas E Dewey to draft a 15 point critique of New Deal policies toward local government. Dewey aims to reduce friction between federal and local authorities and addresses public health veterans affairs and broader governance.
In Albany New York Rep Hamilton Fish secured the Republican nomination for a 14th term despite opposition from Gov Thomas E Dewey Wendell Willkie and two Broadway favorites. He defeated Augustus W Bennet by about 2500 unofficial votes as districts in a redrawn 29th NY district went to Fish in 252 of 278 districts. Bennet said he would run against Fish as an independent and on two third party tickets.
On Guam civilians recounts the Japanese version of Pacific war glory before the American invasion. They claimed Hawaii had fallen, the Panama Canal held, Washington occupied, and the entire Far East and Australia captured. A Guamanian recalls the Japs predicted a hundred year American absence.
A Berlin DNB dispatch confirms Marshal Erwin Rommel was injured in an Allied air attack in France on July 17. It says he escaped with a brain concussion and his condition is satisfactory, adding his life is not endangered.
War Food Administrator Marvin Jones announced utility grade beef steaks and roasts will be ration free effective August 13. Under the grading system utility is next to cutter and canner grade while commercial good and choice grades remain rationed. all other beef cuts stay ration free.
