President Roosevelt allocates over five million dollars in works progress funds for a three fold push to tighten tax collection. Delinquent income taxes and liquor tax evasions are targeted while white collar jobless are employed on surveys to gather data and prevent duplication.
At least seven men are believed dead after a Missouri Kansas Texas freight train derailed near Bruceville Texas. Eight others were injured as 30 of 80 cars left the track and caught fire. Oil from tank cars fed the flames and rescue workers said clearance would take until late today. Sheriff W B Mobley said survivors reported seven men trapped in burning cars.
Berlin Aug 1 Reichsfuehrer Adolf Hitler's Schutz Staffel known as the black corps warns state enemies that Nazi guards must be reckoned with in a showdown. The warning, issued through the black corps organ and Voelkischer Beobachter, targets the Stahlhelm veterans group and signals firm loyalty to Der Fuehrer.
New York reports show July boosts across major trade indices with steel and electrical power sectors leading. Analysts foresee a fourth up surge in 2.5 years as production runs near peak capacity and the economy sustains high activity into fall.
Baton Rouge Louisiana August 1 state land office revenues for 1934 35 reached the highest total since 1928 totaling 1 999 763 including 893 716 01 from mineral leases and 182 514 41 from redemption of tax lands Oil and mineral exploration boosted leases and royalties while redemption of delinquent tax lands rose and land sales for taxes dropped to 1 997 76 under the tax moratorium.

A note signed Mandeville found amid a multi state search for Zenge 26 a suspect in the mutilation killing of Dr Walter J Bauer. Police say the note with blood stains on clothing is likely a ruse and does not reference the attack on Bauer. Bauer a 38 year old instructor at Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery was found dying on Chicago s south side after an alleged abduction from Ann Arbor Michigan. Louise Bauer widow is a Kirksville nurse.
In Houston on Aug 1 Yount Lee Oil of Beaumont was sold in a major deal. Wright Morrow bought the stock and the assets went to Stanolind Oil and Gas, a Standard of Indiana subsidiary, for about 42 to 46 million dollars. Stanolind gained 283000 acres of Texas and Louisiana oil lands and leases, including 3000 acres of proven territory and undeveloped sections across East Texas fields and other Texas and Louisiana fields.
New Orleans public utilities plan to advance 1935 tax payments to aid city payroll funding. Miles Pratt, finance commissioner under Huey Long, said utilities would cover back salaries estimated at about $1.3 million as Walmsley’s administration faced bank borrowing troubles amid Long’s bid to replace the mayor.
Associated Press reports extreme heat across 11 states with record highs. Phillipsburg Kansas hit 111 degrees, Topeka 106, Nebraska and Oklahoma tallies high, and multiple fatalities noted in the midwest. Portland Oregon cooled at 66, while showers touched northern Nebraska and South Dakota.
On August 1 in Houston Texas violence erupted on the waterfront when International Seamen's Union members boarded the tanker Gertrude Kellogg. About 65 union sailors confronted the non union crew, largely Filipinos, in a free for all fight. The ship is American owned with a crew of 22 Filipinos and eight American officers.
The local union of the International Longshoremen's Association voted to strike today to protest alleged discrimination in favor of the Mobile Benevolent Association of stevedores.
Gerald Thompson, 26, faced death penalty after a circuit court jury found him guilty of ravishing and killing Mildred Hallmark, 19, whose battered body was found in a cemetery ditch on June 16. The verdict followed a ten day trial with rapid deliberations, as Thompson awaited the electric chair.
New Orleans August 1. Henry Planche secretary of the New Orleans Cotton Exchange reports the technical position of cotton changed little in the past year. The 1933 34 cotton year ended July 31 with a 4 million bale drop in production offset by a 2.23 million bale decline in world consumption leaving carryover 1.917 million bales below last year. Mr Planche estimated world consumption of American cotton at the conference.
