In Jackson Mississippi two gunmen robbed the First National Bank branch. Deputy Police Chief Beavers Armstrong was wounded as officers pursued the robbers. One bandit was killed in the crossfire and another fled. a lone customer was inside the bank. No other injuries reported. Money taken was believed recovered.
London AP Prime Minister Harold Wilson unveiled a white paper proposing nationalization of 14 major steel firms controlling 90 percent of Britain’s iron and steel and employing 70 percent of the industry’s workers. The plan faces debate in Parliament with two Labour rebels opposing.
City School Board will select architects Tuesday to design two elementary schools and a new southside high school as part of expansion. Supt. Van D Odom notes bond money not yet available and sites include Bernstein Park area and north Lexington School. Board will also consider retaining architects based on prior work and performance.
The U S Weather Bureau expects generally fair skies and a warming trend this weekend with cool nights around 46 to 52 degrees. Day and Saturday highs reach 75 to 80 degrees with winds from five to 15 mph. Monroe recorded a high of 75 and a low of 41 on Thursday.
Lancaster says Louisiana anticipates 751.266 million dollars in state revenues for the next fiscal year. The Legislative Budget Committee recommends a 1.0115 billion dollar operating budget, up 35.5 million from current spending. Federal aid is not included in the revenue figure.

A New Jersey grand jury found Newark Public Relations Director Harry Rosen was paid by Automatic Merchants Inc, a vending firm linked to Gerardo Catena, a reputed New Jersey crime boss. The panel said the police department showed limited zeal in cracking down on the underworld. Rosen resigned and disputed the findings, saying the jury used guilt by association. The investigation looked into lax enforcement of gambling laws in Newark.
In Santo Domingo United States Marines with five tanks created a nine square mile international zone to safeguard Americans and refugees along the waterfront to the U S Embassy. About 4 000 U S troops were to be landed, bringing total forces to over 5 000 as Dominican fighting raged nearby. The State Department described possible Communist links but did not see the revolt as a second front in Vietnam.
PHNOM PENH AP Cambodia banned all free world newsmen from entering the country over an anti-Cambodian campaign by Western journalists. The ban may also extend to Asian journalists allied with the free world. Some rare Western reporters who oppose imperialism could be allowed. Cambodia has previously blocked Western journalists temporarily.
A light quip notes most things wear out with constant use while a bad temper appears to be the exception.
I W Abel was declared the victor today in a bitter fight for president of the United Steelworkers Union. Incumbent David J McDonald said he will contest the result and stay as president until June. McDonald said he would consider an appeal to the Labor Department for a new election. He met with Labor Secretary W Willard Wirtz who had no indication of a federal investigation. McDonald smiled at first during a news conference but snapped at an Abel supporter before telling him to forget it.
The Monroe-West Monroe New Car Dealers Association Ninth Annual Automobile Show runs Saturday and Sunday at Eastgate Shopping Center. Events begin with a 10 a.m. parade, 1 p.m. opening, musical hootenanny, queen coronation, multiple concert performances, and a 6 p.m. closing mark.
State Department of Education will retain KLSE TV in Monroe for a statewide educational program once funds are available. Dodd noted federal funds on a 10 to 1 match and said the program aims to reach more students via television while possible uses include secondary and higher education.
In Seattle Washington AP reports the deadly Pacific Northwest quake left at least five dead, yet Mrs Ed Johnson did not notice it as she spoke outside a church about her gall bladder operation.
In St. Gabriel Louisiana the State Prison for Women faced a three hour riot that involved mud throwing and a rooftop standoff. Police Superintendent Tom Burbank deployed about 30 troopers and fire hoses with tear gas to regain control. Seventeen inmates climbed the dormitory roof, eight guards remained, and guards later recovered the facility with no serious injuries reported.
Carrier based U S Navy planes pounded two North Vietnamese military depots near Hanoi and Phu Qui with 82 aircraft from the Hancock and 25 from the Midway. Reports said 19 buildings were destroyed and four railroad cars knocked out while pilots encountered light anti aircraft fire and returned safely. A MeKong Delta sweep yielded about 600 Viet Cong arms including Springfield rifles.
The Justice Department asked a federal court to bar two Jonesboro restaurants and a cinema from denying Negro customers. The suit, filed in Shreveport, names M. & D. Cafe owners Boyd Templeton and Margaret Templeton. Blue Grill owner Tony John James. and Palace Theater owners Mrs. J. D. Tinsley, Floyd Peale, and Aubrey L. Futrell.
