Negro fugitive Leonard Caesar was shot by police in New Orleans after a dawn pursuit through the French Quarter. He had escaped from parish prison April 21 after shooting the warden in the leg and was suspected of rapes. Police sought him through a dense maze of French Quarter blocks. Caesar was treated at Charity Hospital in very critical condition. Continuous house to house search followed as a note guided officers to his attic hideout.
