The Louisiana supreme court upheld 1928 acts by the state assembly allocating 750000 for free school books. Emmett Cochran and others argued the tax money was not for a public use, contending the funds fail the public use test. The ruling affirms state control of school funding.
Sulphur April 28 Conductor M G Huff and Engineer Fore of Southern Pacific freight train 43 were arrested by city marshal J H Barrett and charged with speeding through the inc orporation at about forty miles an hour The crew were ordered to appear in police court today to answer the charge.
Mrs. Maggie Evans a 60 year old Memphis mother is in critical condition after two black bandits robbed her lunchroom yesterday. Her son B J Evans 20 testified one attacker shot her when she reached for a pistol as they demanded money. The pair fled in a car with a third man waiting outside.
Two 20 year old inmates Sally Joyce Richards and Amelia Bascom attempted to flee Auburn State Prison for women. They battered the night matron to reach the yard before troopers recaptured them. Both were new arrivals, serving sentences on holdup charges.
Herman Dodson 23 is jailed in Fayetteville Tennessee charged with first degree murder for shooting his wife at their home while she held a baby. The infant reportedly escaped injury.
Two SMU students were wounded while thwarting a theatre robbery at the Varsity theatre in Dallas. The bandit, M. Houston of Nashville, died later. a woman companion was held for questioning as campus residents helped to detain him until police arrived.

Shreveport’s population is 76 207 as announced by census supervisor O C Hathaway. The ten year increase is about 74 percent from 43 874 in 1920, with 28 015 in 1910. The current census includes 3 000 residents from South Highlands and Cedar Grove areas formerly outside city limits.
Unusually big snakes described as deadly by H R Robbins were shown on the Monroe Milhaven road property. A five foot rattler with nine rattles drew crowds as Earl Robbins pinned it with a forked stick and rope. The other five footer, a stinging snake, was killed. The rattler was donated to the Boy Scout troop at the Louisiana Training Institute.
Pecos Texas April 28 a tor rential rain saved the business district from destruction by fire after flames had caused 250000 in damage. The fire department lost control and half a block of buildings including the Hotel Justis and First National Bank were devastated when rain began to fall. Lightning struck between the hotel wall and a grocery starting the blaze.

The bullet pierced body of John Hodaz, accused of bombing a Plant City home, was found hanging from a tree ten miles northwest of Plant City. Hodaz, believed lynched by eight men, was discovered by woodcutter N M Davis who notified Sheriff R T Johughin. The coroner and State Attorney investigated as Hodaz had been shot multiple times, including a heart wound.
Graf Zeppelin will start its South American flight on May 18, an official announcement said after the airship completed a successful England crossing. The craft landed at 6 40 a m in Friedrichshafen after a dawn appearance and a circling approach as the landing crew assembled.
