A Standard Oil steamship was swept by a swift current in the Mississippi River with casualties reported and units rushing to assist. Rescue efforts focus on recovering crew and securing the vessel amid rising floodwaters.
Five thousand barrels of Mexican crude oil spilled and drifted downstream after the Gottheil struck the Wilkomer in a swift Mississippi current near Baton Rouge. The Gottheil listed and sank stern first but five vessels aided in rescue. four crewmen were initially missing but later found. One compartment of oil was lost. the ship’s papers were recovered, and salvaging is planned.
Judge William N Potts a Monroe figure and senior member of Hudson Potts and Bernstein died at his Breard street home after a week of illness He was 22 years old survived by wife son John J Potts and daughter Elvie Clarke He served Grace Episcopal church and was an honored Confederate veteran member of Henry W. Olia La April 27 Aged man known as Uncle Drew Mays aged eighty a Confederate veteran and Mason drowned Thursday attempting to cross the swollen Castor bayou after heavy rains. His buggy and horse were found nearby. He left Urania to reach his west Bayou Castor home.
