Rome April 25 A demonstration in Genoa protests President Witsch’s attack on the name of a street renamed to honor him. Norfolk Virginia April 24 Fire destroyed the building housing the Norfolk Dispatch causing estimated losses around 200000 dollars.
Four men robbed the Inter-City Bank on the state line between Kansas City Missouri and Kansas City Kansas. They escaped in a car with about $11,000 in cash and Liberty Bonds totaling $15,000. Three robbers entered the bank while the fourth waited outside and locked the cashier and a one-year-old boy in the vault. A customer who entered was also locked in.
Washington April 26 The government price stabilization dispute reaches a final stage as Secretary Edfield asks the Railroad Administration to confer with the Industrial Board of Commerce. Directors warned that without action to yield definite results they may have to resume personal affairs.
Scarcity of offers prompts Monroe Masons to call all citizens to extend sleeping quarters April 27 to 29 for visiting brethren. Pledges fall short of requirements while organizers stress hospitality beyond Masonic rituals. John M. Munholland, chairman, and P. Stubbs and B. Handy urge immediate cooperation.
The Shreveport Scottish Rite raised a class of 278 candidates from Fourth to Thirty second degrees this week. Four from Monroe praised the work, with a Monroe Ceremonial planned Tuesday to give Shrine degrees. Potentate Rowland promises forty to fifty attendees, and a Yellow Dog Lodge side degree may debut at the Picture Garden.
Baton Rouge April 2 T J Greer of Shreveport named by Governor Pleasant to serve on the Louisiana State Housing Commission created by the 1918 legislature. Other appointees include labor leaders, architects, bankers, merchants and civic officials with plans for reforming New Orleans red light district into modern tenement housing for the poor.
New Orleans April 26 Governor Pleasant announced from Baton Rouge that he will issue a proclamation declaring Monday April 28 a state holiday to welcome the returning Louisiana soldiers. Mayor Behrman learned the Jennings Cavalry troop Rainbow Division could not reach by Monday for the reception and would instead route via Jennings, La. to Camp Shelby for a short welcome stop.
In Chicago on Friday afternoon April 26 a divorcee case ended dramatically when Mrs Elmer R Simpson shot her husband a telegraph operator while he testified. The bullet passed through his mouth causing a likely fatal wound and Mrs Simpson was arrested.
Sparks, a contractor, and David Callaway, a workman, are patients at St Francis Sanitarium after a 4 10 p m collapse of a 30 by 90 foot frame garage under construction at DeStard and Eleventh Streets. Sparks suffered a broken leg and hip injuries. Callaway was severely injured. The wind toppled the partially braced structure as braces were removed. Sparks avoided the fall but a joist crosspiece struck him. both men are reported not in danger and expected to recover soon. Sparks states the incident will not affect current or future contracts, to be managed by a supervising foreman.
A three day Grand Commandery celebration opens with services at the First Methodist Church Sunday at 8:20 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. dedication at the Masonic Temple Monday at 5 p.m. Public attendance is invited as visitors arrive by train and participate in parades, lectures, and a Shrine show titled A Musical Sandwich.
