Washington April 26 The army bill debate intensifies with opponents denouncing selective conscription while supporters defend it. House and Senate plan final votes by Saturday as leaders prepare closing speeches.
A wartime editorial urges unreserved cooperation and unity to counter a German threat. It stresses collective effort, civil resilience, and national solidarity as the path to victory.
Washington April 26 Foreign Minister Balfour of Britain stated the United States would not enter entangling alliances while pledging unreserved support for democracy against Germany He spoke during meetings with Wilson and Lansing and noted the alliance question had no basis in fear of a separate peace He observed American resolve to join the conflict and praised Allied cooperation amid wartime strains and the arrival of the French mission and a 200 million loan to the Allies.
William Moy, convicted last week of murder in a car crash tied to Luther Barden’s death, was sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday afternoon by Judge Ben C. Dawkins. Moy was transported to Baton Rouge by Deputy Sheriff Fred Pettit. Moy, previously described as a quiet man, was linked to the Barden killing in which his two sons were said to participate.
Washington dispatch notes Nevada led states in proportionate regular army recruiting from April 1 to 24, contributing 94.9 percent of its war quota based on approximate population. Georgia led southern states with 67 percent, Florida 21 percent, Louisiana 14.2, and Micheelop 9.9.

Coroner C. P. Gray presided over an inquest into the death of O. P. Det fy who died last Thursday behind a Five Points saloon in suspicious circumstances. The jury found death caused by excessive drinking and head wounds from an accidental fall. no arrests were made.
General Passenger Agent C F Woods and Traveling Passenger Agent P M Donahoe of the V and P A W roads announce a through sleeping car service from Monroe to New Orleans starting April 30 connecting with Illinois Central at Jackson Mixes. The first car leaves New Orleans May 1 at 3 a m and Monroe May 1 with arrival in New Orleans at 8 10 a m. The return trip begins May 1 from Monroe to Jackson then to New Orleans arriving 9 p m open at New Orleans for occupants 9 p.m. The service uses a twelve section drawing room car for now.
The state rested its case in the Spannell murder trial at Coleman Texas after calling fewer than a dozen witnesses. Testimony described the July 20 1916 shooting of Spannell’s wife Crystal and Col M C Butler as Spannell’s car crashed into a fence. Eyewitnesses reported gunfire. Butler lay in the tonneau with Mrs Spannell nearby as Spannell questioned whether he had killed someone.
The French commission began its day with calls on the State War and Navy Departments as Ex Premier Viviani and other dignitaries were greeted by loud clerks' cheers. The party then met President Wilson while British officials prepared for joint talks with American counterparts on Friday. Viviani delivered Poincare's letter to Wilson and may address the Senate alongside Balfour.

Berlin unrest and delayed Reichstag adjournment raise May Day violence fears. Reports also note no Austrian news, and Turkish famine and devastation as British forces push toward Mesopotamia.
A large party of business and professional men from the city traveled to Calhoun this morning to represent the Chamber of Commerce at the agricultural preparedness meeting at the Experiment Station. The caravan carried messages urging farmers to boost food crops.
The funeral of Archbishop Blenk of New Orleans was held with Catholic dignitaries from across the United States in attendance. Thousands gathered at the church for the service and burial in the crypt of St. Louis Cathedral.
