Taft administration plans aid for a levee project along the Mississippi valley. The Senate committee warns against unsafe live electrical wiring and urges caution in the dam and flood control efforts.
Seventy prominent business leaders led by O N Killough of Wynne Arkansas met at the White House to urge immediate appropriation for levee repairs along the Mississippi River. President Taft pledged to seek congressional support and a new bill proposes 1.5 million dollars available now for levee work.
The forecast calls for unsettled and cooler conditions tonight and Saturday with variable winds and light showers possible across the region. Temperatures are expected to dip modestly, bringing a cooler feel to the spell.
In the Senate resolution action is fast tracked and in the House the Rivers and Harbors committee handles it. Senator Knute Nelson, chair of Commerce, jokes about keeping the people out of the water as Southern delegates applaud. The subcommittee plans to approve the stated sum, but delayed report to hear the valley delegation.
The Mississippi River fell at most points over the last day except in New Orleans and St. Louis where a tenth of a foot rise occurred, with Baton Rouge steady. Floodwaters threaten Mor tanza and Pointe Coupee levees as Dog Tail crevasse waters rise in Clayton Ferriday and lower Tensas and Concordia parishes forcing hundreds to move to high ground. Seaflower river valley shows improvement though about two million acres remain submerged 2 to 12 feet for weeks.
Henry Greff a 70 year old New Orleans druggist died by suicide in Madisonville after fearing arrest by New Orleans officials for an alleged crime. He left no note and had communicated only vague fears to acquaintances. His son and two daughters in New Orleans and another son in Vicksburg were informed. Police found him dead in his room at 7:30 this morning after a pistol shot.
Memphis April 25 The St. Louis and San Francisco and St. Louis Iron Mountain and Southern will resume west of Memphis tonight. The St. Louis Southwestern and the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific will resume tomorrow. The freight embargo has been removed west of Memphis.
A News-Star representative and Mr. Guy P. Stubbs toured floodlands in Richland Madison and Farm parishes in a small open motorboat. They faced constant peril as eight to fifteen feet of floodwaters swept across farms, swamps, and railroad lines from Delhi to Roosevelt and Talulah. The party witnessed destroyed levees, drowned stock, and abandoned plantations while reporting near-unimaginable devastation and displacement of hundreds of residents.
In Washington a House vote authorized a sweeping probe into financial interests and their ties to industry. The Pujo resolution passed 241 to 25 amid heated debate as Mann accused Democrats of pressuring corporations for campaign support.
