Washington April 25 Unanimous approval of the Navy appropriation bill amounting to 92 644 725 701 was sought in the Senate today Senator Overton Democratic Louisiana chairman of the appropriations subcommittee who steered the measure predicted an all yes vote in the final passage He noted the House passed it without dissent ten days earlier and said the bill would signal allies that Congress backs the war effort with funding to speed victory.
Technical Sergeant Charles Edward Kelly, back on furlough from the Italian campaign, is greeted by family and hundreds in Pittsburgh's Dutchtown. Police guard his home as Mayor Scully offers a hotel suite, but Kelly insists the home visit is for his mother and rests after a night of cheering.
Washington April 23 4 The War department told Congress that about 50 cents of every army dollar goes to small business plants defined as under 61 workers. Undersecretary Robert P Patterson said 24 percent of all war contracts went to such firms in 1947 and the dollar value totaled 4 500 000 009 or 126 percent of total war department supply outlays. It was noted that 3 8 percent of funds to small firms reached subcontracts and that nearly 30 cents of each army dollar passed to small plants. Patterson urged no basis for fear big business will supplant small firms and said contracts will continue to go to suitable small plants as long as war work exists.
Tokyo radio quoted a war ministry statement acknowledging the hardships faced by Japanese seamen maintaining overseas supplies. It said Allied air power and submarines are harassing communications and that supplies move under extremely hazardous conditions.
Robert McLean publisher of the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin was reelected president of the Associated Press by the AP board. Houston Harte of the San Angelo Standard was named first vice president and Norman Chandler of the Los Angeles Times was elected second vice president. Frank B. Noyes remains honorary president. A deed of trust filed in Fort Worth covers Colonel Elliott Roosevelt's share of community property. Ruth Gongs Roosevelt and Continental National Bank named trustees for ten years to benefit the Roosevelt siblings. Executed March 24 at the U S Embassy London the document transfers ranch property near Benbrook and Roosevelt assets including Texas State network and several broadcasting companies. Roosevelt keeps title to several horses.
The Red Army says it shattered a German attack nest near Dubno, northeast of Lwow, with 400 Nazis killed and positions restored. In the Carpathians south-west of Stanislawow, over 20 enemy troops were reported killed after crossing a stream. Air force blockades Sevastopol, sinking seven transports and a barge, while 37 German planes are claimed destroyed.
In Naples nine WACs lose their billet to a bombing that destroyed their apartment, though no one was injured. Captain Jane A. Stirtch from Philadelphia reassures the group as they seek new shelter. Sergeant Beatrice White from Middletown recalls the blast and loss of personal effects.

In Houma Louisiana on April 25 a salt burned Ensign William Thewes 21 of Lakewood California described fighting for life after a navy blimp plunged into the Gulf of Mexico during a thunderstorm. He said the blimp rose on an updraft then dived after 40 minutes into rough seas. Thewes was the sole survivor of ten crew members.
Associated Press reports the Midwest endures widespread flooding with 12 dead and thousands displaced. Six missing in Kansas, five in Missouri, one in Illinois. extensive crop damage and transportation disruptions persist despite falling streams in parts of Kansas and Missouri. Overnight rain looms, threatening renewed floods and longer sheltering of evacuees.
American and Dutch forces press toward Hollandia in Dutch New Guinea as mud and terrain slow progress on three air fields within a 350 square mile area. Allied air power claims wiped out most Nipponese planes as 14,000 Japanese defenders retreat across Tadji and surrounding pelts.
Republican leaders in the House oppose the administration bill to raise the debt limit from 216 billion to 260 billion dollars. Knutson argues a limit around 240 billion would suffice, claiming the administration would exceed any set limit. Roosevelt projected about 254 billion by June 1945. debt stood at 186.97 billion on April 21, 1945.
