Louisiana's unemployment benefit fund may lose more than $1 million due to delinquent employers not being notified of back payments, per a state audit. The 1953-53 figures show $2,071,894.79 in unpaid contributions, with $758,771.02 uncollectible.
In Birmingham Khrushchev claimed the Soviet Union would soon have guided missiles carrying hydrogen bombs capable of hitting any location. He alleged the USSR was first to explode an H bomb from a plane, challenging the West as crowds jeered their arrival.

Two Negro women Edwena Nickerson 20 of 203 North 14th Street and Betty Jean Tyler 17 of 2900 Jackson Street escaped from the Negro women's cell at Monroe City Jail Sunday morning. Chief M. L. Peters reported the break occurred when the rear door padlock was beaten off with a heavy instrument. Nickerson was serving seven months in default of a 350 dollar fine for simple battery and Tyler a seven month compulsory sentence for illegal use of a weapon. The jail housed eight prisoners at the time. the other inmates remained.
The Supreme Court refused to review a Richmond circuit ruling that racial segregation on intrastate buses violates the federal constitution, leaving the decision in place. The unanimous action comes ten years after the high court struck down segregation on interstate buses in 1946.
Baton Rouge Mayor-President Jesse Webb Jr asked Sen. Eastland to conduct a Communist probe here. Eastland said a Baton Rouge cell is small, with limited data. The city, a booming industrial center on the Mississippi River, hosts refining and petrochemical activity and has laws on subversive registration.
Melting snow sent flood crests rolling down icy rivers in Idaho North Dakota and Minnesota with lowland residents warned to move out. Flood threats grew along the Kottenai and Blackfoot rivers in Idaho while Red River and Red Lake River overflowed in North Dakota and Minnesota. Families nearest Park River and Grafton were evacuated as ice jams were blasted on the Red Lake River.
Detroit fire captain Russell J. Bartels jumped from the cab after a hurried response and forgot to close the door. He sustained cuts and bruises when the truck sped from the station, injuring him during the departure.

Huntsville Alabama. Four white men Charles Connally William Walling Doc Hill and Walter Thompson all of New Hope were held in connection with the death of L Baldwin a 60 year old Negro struck by a large stone while walking a cow along U S highway 431. An additional suspect Ian Vann 20 was being sought. Autopsy to determine if the fall caused death. Witnesses said the group rode in an open convertible and threw rocks at Negroes.
In Boston a two nation search is under way for Philadelphia Boston society couple Mr and Mrs Walter Biddle Page and their son Christopher 3 long reported missing since a Mexico trip for a travel agency. Mrs Whitney says last word came from Cuernavaca Mexico 18 months ago and the FBI confirms the abandoned Page automobile near Cuernavaca triggered the hunt.
An 11 year old, Robert Curgenven, told police he killed his mother, father, and older brother at their Mansfield Connecticut home after fearing reform school. He described aiming poorly due to eyesight and said the family had picked on him. He slept at the farmhouse that night and reported the killings the next day.
The Louisiana Civil Service Commission opens hearings in Baton Rouge to probe State police Captain Fred Barnes over alleged political activity while employed as a civil servant. Barnes, a former major and former campaign driver for Lt. Gov. Barham, resigned last fall and was reinstated last month as a captain assigned to special investigations for the State Pardon Board. The commission will also hear Cassius Clay’s appeal after a court cleared him of public bribery related to drug tests of racehorses at the New Orleans Fair Grounds.
Senator Ellender of Louisiana urged President Eisenhower to back a revised soil bank bill with added provisions. He outlined ceilings on cotton acreage, expanded corn allotments, and compromise supports for oats barley rye and grain sorghums to win quick congressional action and avoid rigid price supports.
A. Maithes the Shreveport Times general manager since the Ewing family purchased the paper had a heart attack yesterday and was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The 70 year old Mailhes was born in New Orleans and had worked with Col. Robert Ewing before the Times purchase. He also led the Monroe News-Star for about a year after Wilson Ewing’s death. His wife Viola Mailhes was a national PTA leader and former PTA president. she died about two years ago.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles told publishers that the United States is ready to cooperate with western European democracies to expand NATO beyond a mutual defense pact into a closer union of free nations. He spoke at the AP luncheon during the ASNE meeting, stressing greater economic and political cooperation while preserving national independence.
Leonard Caesar remains at large after forcing his way from Orleans Parish Prison and shooting the warden. Police hunt continues as authorities seek the escaped inmate and secure the facility.
West Monroe High School principal P G Mangum held a press conference to address the suspension of three athletes and to publish a letter sent to Commissioner T H Waters about the eligibility questions raised. He stated the conference was to clarify the situation and after a recent school meeting.
