President Eisenhower swore in Christian A. Herter as the new secretary of state in the White House cabinet room. Eisenhower called him the best person for the job as leaders from both parties watched the ceremony.
Fidel Castro, Cuba's prime minister, arrives in New York and plans a noon meeting with U N Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold. He spends the day mingling with crowds at Penn Station and outside his hotel, greeting supporters and old friends.
The Labor Department said the consumer price index remained at 123.7 percent of the 1947-49 average in March. The index stayed within a two point range for nine months, finishing two tenths below the all time high of 123.9 reached last July and again in November. Falling food costs offset higher prices for other items while factory workers’ disposable earnings reached a record high.
Colorado Springs police describe Walter Richard Fitzpatrick as a pleasant boy who confessed to stabbing Florence D. Martin, a 65 year old city welfare worker, 43 times with a hunting knife to obtain money. The chief called the case one of the most vicious he has seen.
Northeast Louisiana superintendents urge repeal of Act No. 130 governing pay for teachers working more than nine months. Fifth District group cites higher农业 salaries for some agriculture teachers versus principals and votes to seek action from legislators, Governor Long, and Lt. Governor Frazar. Continued on Page 7A.
C J Baldwin science and biology teacher at Ouachita Parish High School will represent Monroe in the state Outstanding Young Teacher of the Year contest. He was chosen from 18 contestants entered by various schools and is sponsored by the Monroe Junior Chamber of Commerce. Baldwin will travel to Natchitoches Saturday to compete. He is a graduate of Columbia High School and Louisiana Tech.
Rifle shots rang out as police escorted nonunion workers from Harriet Henderson Cotton Mills in Henderson North Carolina. Homemade gasoline bombs exploded and flames rose while strikers threatened violence. No injuries reported, but officials warned of more trouble following the worst outbreak in 23 weeks of labor unrest.
Jurors were selected for the trial of Robert Waller 36 charged with fatally stabbing Frisby Flowers 18 on December 21 1958 in a Madison Parish cafe during a dispute. Trial postponed due to defense attorney illness. Flowers died four days later in a Delhi clinic.
In Albany, 50 Hudson Valley farmers protested near the New York Mercantile Exchange, giving away 12 000 eggs to dramatize hurting income. They demand Secretary Benson set a 35 cent dozen floor, blaming Southern competition for the 29 cent New York city rate versus 52 to 55 cents last year.
About 350 workers went to their jobs without incident in Henderson North Carolina after the prior day’s violence during the Harriet Henderson Cotton Mills strike. Police reported no further clashes and workers continued their walkout amid tensions.
In Henderson North and South plants violence flared as about 1,000 workers walked out after a stalled contract dispute. Shots were fired and gasoline set afire near mill gates as state troopers escorted workers after a second-shift strike. Union leader Boyd Payton pressed for job data while Gov Hodges sought a new contract arbitration.
Relief from recent storms was expected today and tonight with temperatures rising modestly. Partly cloudy skies covered the area with a cool night forecast. lows 42 to 46 and highs 62 to 66. In Monroe yesterday the high reached 66 and the low 50 with 0.45 inch of rain. Pollen count this morning was 190.
Inverness man J W Pruett 32 was shot in the face while in a car near a night club in Sunflower Humphreys counties Mississippi. He had been cleared in a Cuban murder case involving Mrs Ethel McCaslin's death and was transported to Greenville for bullet removal.

Henry J. Landry, 52, furniture designer from Ashburnham Massachusetts, says four escapees from Gardner State Hospital forced him to drive for 20 hours from his home to the Canadian line and back into New York with knives at his side. He fled during a gas stop in Amherst New York. police arrested Carl Kasper James Robinson Frederick Ahearn and Roland Cole, all charged with kidnapping and auto theft across a state line.
W. Barlow Inabnet Sr prominent Monroe oil and gas contractor and Ouachita Parish school board member died at 7215 DeSiard Road at 4 am. He was 67 and funeral plans were set for First Methodist Church of Monroe under Mulhearn Funeral Home. Survived by widow, one daughter, three sons, five sisters, 12 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He served on the school board since 1942 and was a WWI veteran.
Supreme Court Justice Saul Szeit ruled Sugar Ray Robinson must defend the middleweight title against Carmen Basilio within fifteen days or lose the crown. The 12 page decision upholds the State Athletic Commission’s power to select the challenger and fix the bout date.
British dancer Margot Fonteyn reached Miami after 24 hours in Panama City jail on alleged government plot charges. She refused to answer reporters and left the country under release conditions. Her arrest involved aiding her husband in an alleged plot against Panama's government.
William P. O'Brien, Inspector of Pharmacy in New Orleans, spoke at a two day Northeast State School of Pharmacy seminar on Narcotics Our Growing Menace. He traced narcotics from ancient opium to modern drugs, noting the enslaving grip of heroin and the progressive dependence they create.
Refugees in Nepal describe a Tibetan catastrophe with thousands whipped daily and nuns sent to army camps. They claim about 2,500 monasteries damaged or destroyed, 8,000 monks killed, 12,000 arrested, and 800,000 lamas displaced.
A 12 man jury failed to reach a verdict in the Frank Dyer murder trial in Farmerville after five hours of deliberation. The mistrial was declared at 10 45 a.m. Judge J R Dawkins Jr commended the jurors and discharged them. Dyer claimed self defense saying Nolan tried to break up his home. The state seeks a murder conviction without capital punishment.
