Fort Bragg N C April 22.9 First Lieutenant Barton B Hewitt of Eau Claire Wisconsin and Second Lieutenant Frank B Bragg of Savannah Georgia were killed in a transport plane crash while landing at Popefield yesterday. Major L A Walsh of Brooklyn was seriously injured along with Sergeant August Mannoff. Minor injuries were reported for Sergeant Percy C Adams of Mississippi and Sergeant Harold A Wiedesman of St Paul Minnesota.
Survivors of an American merchant vessel torpedoed in the Caribbean tell how the ship played tag for 12 hours with a submarine, attempting to ram it before it sank. One missing physician, Dr Benjamin A Price, former Idaho health officer, last seen aboard as the ship went down.
President Roosevelt based on wartime powers announced seizure of all enemy owned patents including German patents on synthetic rubber and fuels. The move, urged by lawmakers, seeks to develop axis-held patents for U N needs while preventing reversion to foreign hands after the war. Aliens property custodian Leo Crowley said research already targets artificial rubber fuels foods and related technologies.

U S agents dispute the king’s invincibility as Steve Kaslov age 14, weight 300 pounds, sits in jail after failing to post 5000 bail. A hearing is set on charges of filing false statements with a local draft board claiming he performed a wedding for two followers, while the government alleges Tom Dermito and Miyeva Dermito are siblings, not a married pair.
Honolulu reports Army air corps personnel in Hawaii eager to see combat. Half of flying officers hail from ten states, led by California Texas Illinois New York and Oklahoma.
