Police tightened security in Augusta after a fatal shooting in a predominately Black neighborhood left Leslie Luttes 16 dead and George Lewis 15 wounded. Seventeen people were arrested, many teens, as officers combed streets for knives, clubs, and weapons amid four days of racial unrest.

In Geneva a 17 nation disarmament conference faced a Soviet threat to withdraw over Washington’s refusal to suspend nuclear testing during talks. After three hours of wrangling the body adjourned to Tuesday with a neutral proposal as a basis, while Zorin balked at on site inspections. Dean said the United States would not halt testing until a treaty is signed.
French authorities in Oran issued strict orders for police and troops to crack down after Easter. Starting Monday, officers will fire on sight at anyone on roofs or balconies and may use planes against suspected Secret Army Organization movements in the city.
The Daughters of the American Revolution urged Congress to probe the Army suspension of Maj. Archibald E. Roberts, while Sen. Strom Thurmond urged an Army review. Roberts, who claimed Yorty was labeled a Communist and Williams had leftist leanings, awaits a hearing before the Stennis committee.
A 12 member jury near 1 p.m. Friday acquitted N Bryant James, Farmerville businessman and former national Republican committeeman, of embezzlement of fixtures and furniture from the Farmerville Bank. The not guilty verdict followed about 20 minutes of deliberations in U S District Court. James’ acquittal ends a multi year district court controversy. He had been indicted twice by a federal grand jury, but Judge Dawkins threw two indictments out.
The Air Force announced eight pilots chosen from 55 volunteers for space duty at Edwards Air Force Base California. The selections exceed Mercury program applicants in qualification. An eight month advanced astronautics course will start in June. Names: Albert H. Crews Jr Charles C. Bock Jr William T. Twinting Robert W. Smith Donald M. Sorlie Robert H. McIntosh Byron F. Knolle Lloyd N. Hoover. All Air Force officers except Hoover, a Navy lieutenant commander. Ages 32 to 36. many hold engineering master’s degrees and 2000+ flying hours.
ALEXANDRIA LA UPI The parents of Air Force Captain Albert Crews welcomed the pride but preferred he stay closer to the ground. Crews is among eight men chosen today for space training at Edwards Air Force Base California. He was born in El Dorado Arkansas, schooled in Louisiana, and is a Buckeye High School and University of Southwestern Louisiana graduate.
Duncan Cook district manager and B F Anderson district engineer for the State Department of Conservation minerals division will attend a Baton Rouge meeting Monday. The gathering is for managers and staff from all six oil and gas districts of the Louisiana Conservation Commission.
The annual Easter Kiddie Show features Mickey Mouse and begins Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Paramount Theatre under the auspices of the Monroe Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Foresters at a West Monroe meeting of the fifth district tree farm dedication of the Louisiana Forestry Association discussed eats and wearables made from cellulose wood fiber. Candy and cookies would have low calories, chocolate and vanilla flavors, while dresses and a sport coat used paper thread fabric claimed to withstand high pressure. Public relations head Frank Heyward described the "wooden" fashions as durable yet coarse, with textiles spun from wet strength paper strips twisted into thread.
Baton Rouge UPI reports attorney general Jack Gremillion dampened hopes for an early offshore boundary settlement with the federal government. Gov. Davis called a meeting with state officials to speed talks, while Gremillion warned Louisiana remains at the mercy of Washington. He noted no offer had been made and stressed delays until federal draft reviews are completed. The meeting was set for next Thursday with officials Helis Boggs Willis and Eldner in attendance.
The forecast calls for clear to partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures this weekend with highs near 82 today and Saturday. Overnight lows range from 53 to 60. Sunset is 6:41 p.m. today and sunrise tomorrow is 5:32 a.m.
Sheriff A. J. Stephens and four deputies captured seven gallons of moonshine at 4 am. The liquor was taken from Willie Williams, 47, and Hattie Scott, 26, both of Route 1, Tallulah. The suspects, driving a pickup near War Saw Bridge, faced charges of possession. Scott confessed to making and selling the whiskey for 7 dollars a gallon and led deputies to a 55 gallon drum still on her property. Bond set at 500 dollars each.
Arron Britton Carroll aged 76 died Friday morning after an attack at his home. He was dead on arrival at St. Francis Hospital. Funeral arrangements were in progress at noon with Mulhearn Funeral Home directing. Burial will be in Hasley Cemetery. A West Monroe resident since 19, he was a retired merchant of 1311 Trenton Street. He belonged to First Methodist Church and is survived by his widow Birdie Carroll, three sisters and six brothers plus several nieces and nephews.
Four Memphis teenagers were killed when their car was struck broadside by a mail truck. Identified victims were Johnny Brooks 17 Anthony Gary Faloaggio 17 William B Embury 16 and David Marcrum 17. Local highway patrol investigated the crash.
Ward 3 juryman L B Pettit said he would vote against any move to dismiss parish engineer Wayne Huckaby whether or not he is elected president. Pettit stressed Huckaby’s work and cooperation, noting he told A E Montgomery two weeks earlier he planned no firing. Pettit and four Pettit supporters also opposed Huckaby’s hiring in May 1961. other jurors named were Carpenter Earle Coon and Roberts.
In Algiers police and riot troops arrested ex General Raoul Salan leader of the Sec Our Army Organization during a downtown search for a clandestine radio transmitter. The 62 year old veteran, who faced a death sentence in absentia for leading the Algiers generals putsch, was identified by former colleagues including Gen Charles Ailleret as he was taken aboard a plane en route to Paris.
The Pentagon directs that all Negro and all white Reserve units be integrated as rapidly as is practical. The action aims to enforce the 1948 executive order banning racial segregation in the armed forces and does not apply to the National Guard. Roswell Gilpatric issued the April 3 memorandum to the Army Navy and Air Force.

UPI reports an all white Ole Miss attorney told a three judge federal panel that James E Meredith was denied admission because he lacked good moral character. Meredith, 29, claims the denial was race based.
Dallas police court of inquiry heard Frank Cain testify that Billy Sol Estes, when told of FBI probes, said he would call Lyndon Johnson. Cain said Estes warned of possible prosecution and that efforts to “work this out” would hinge on cooperation and keeping grain elevators full. Estes later faced a $500,000 bond, later reduced to $100,000.
