A report outlines a plan to incite rebellion against Betancourt in Venezuela. It claims rebels, led by ex air force general Jesus Maria Castro Leon, are gathering near the Colombian border and may invade Venezuela with support from abroad.
News recounts a failed coup against Betancourt in July 1958 as Venezuela's military loyalists defend the regime. Oil workers strike, halting production. Caracas garrison and garrisons nationwide pledge loyalty, while political leaders urge opposition to the rebellion. Gen Quevedo calls for calm and constitutional order.
Prof. Ernest B. Bartley of the University of Florida warned on Tuesday that rising construction of homes on waterfront property since Florida's last major hurricane has created a tremendous potential for disaster in many coastal regions.
A committee report accuses the Foreign Loan Fund of endorsing U.S. foreign policy, while noting the board chairman is Undersecretary of State Doug Las Dilon. The DLF argues Congress required alignment with the secretary of state's foreign policy guidance guiding loan decisions on merit.
A municipal publicity committee formed by the Civitan Club and Ouachita Association for the Mentally Retarded with KNOE and News-Star-World representatives met at noon. They discussed a car sticker plan and methods to promote a pilot Habilitation Center to train mentally retarded residents for usable jobs in Ouachita Parish. The center would serve habilitable individuals, with about 1806 locally retarded people noted as roughly three percent of the population.
Davis and his slate won decisively as anti-Davis voters and a large Black turnout helped him sweep statewide offices in Louisiana. A constitutional amendment to add a judge in the 26th Judicial District carried 3 to 1. Returns from about 1,637 precincts show broad Republican setbacks.
Opening night of the Little Theatre production of Guys and Dolls is postponed to Saturday night due to illness in the cast. Director Ivan Uttal announced the change and patrons with Friday reservations should contact the theatre to switch nights.
Former Louisiana governor Sam H. Jones will address the Monroe Rotary Club noon meeting Thursday. He will discuss the Pardee Rehabilitation Committee and its work on parolee rehabilitation, chaired by Jones under the Forgotten Man's Committee initiative.
The board settled with Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius withdrawing warrants over allegedly severe paddling of Earl. Mrs. Maples, seven months pregnant, was offered a maternity leave which she may withdraw. Meacham noted the staff crisis followed Farr's thrashing and mass resignations. Mrs. Gordon Morrow called the episode tragic for Haifa.
A Jackson Parish pioneer, Wyatt, first settled near Weston after arriving around 1815. He purchased 800 acres from the Quachita Indians for gunpowder and built a log house. The Wyatt children, eight boys and four girls, were famed in local lore. only Bob Wyatt survives today in Jonesboro. Funeral details were not yet available.
Grevemberg angrily denies allegations of being a turncoat while urging Congress to widen deportation efforts against Marcello, a Gretna gambler accused in numerous court actions. He accuses the mob figure of eroding Louisiana society and asks Eisenhower to investigate his presence in the state.
Demo jurors in Ward One are listed with Precinct One Plus Two counts totaling 707 in the first primary. Ward Seven had 214 votes with only one precinct. Nolan, 40, a Col umbian Carbon operator, and Battaglia, 28, a plumber and grocer, appear in candidacy notes. Studdard, a 16 year jury veteran, polled 412 votes in December primary.
The two victors join a 14 member police jury with members Roberts aged 55 and Studdard among those who won in the first Democratic primary and were unopposed in January. The full slate includes Ward 2 to Ward 10 members and 20 year veteran Roberts.
