Calls for help came from two mines where demonstrators gathered as national guardsmen and deputies moved to quell threats. An investigation into the slaying of Ed England was announced by William Mitch president of district No 20 United Mine Workers.
Governor J. M. Futrall ordered the state penal board to stop using convicts to pull 100-pound cotton planters at Tucker state prison farm in Little Rock. He said pulling by men is not harmful and requested the board to end the practice after a report from his secretary and the board chairman.
The revised stock market control bill was approved 11 to 8 by the senate banking committee after a two year inquiry into Wall Street. Committee counsel Ferdinand Pecora said the bill has teeth to curb past practices, with Roosevelt backing assured early Senate action.
Officers for the code authority representing food and grocery distributors of the fifth congressional district were named at a Thursday meeting at Central Grammar School. L. L. Harry D. Wilson state commissioner of agriculture and J. Y. Sanders Jr state senator and Huey Long opponent start campaigns for the sixth district congressional primary run off in Franklinton Louisiana where ballots were burned on the courthouse square last December. Wilson runs as an independent while Sanders alleges Long backing. Wilson's manager Frank Ellis says the tour opens with a Franklinton rally tonight and Sanders plans a speech there tomorrow with Murphy J. Sylvest aiding.

General Douglas MacArthur told a House military affairs sub committee he gave unqualified approval to a bill by Representative Thompson to increase enlisted men from 118 750 to 165 000 and officers from 12 000 to 14 603 He said enactment would enhance U S security and rehabilitate thousands of men suffering from the depression noting past authorizations were 286 000 enlisted and 18 000 officers but shrinkage left numbers dangerously low.
Washington April 20 The house rejected senate amendments to the sugar control bill and sent it to conference to resolve differences. The senate passed the bill yesterday. Speaker Rainey named conferees Jones of Texas Doxey of Mississippi Fulmer of South Carolina Democrats and Hope of Kansas Kinzer of Pennsylvania Republicans.

Mrs. L. C. Kelly a 27 year old Jackson railroad repairman wife returned home this morning after a three day search by hundreds of volunteers officers and Legionnaires through Pearl river swamp areas. She was exhausted and chilled but unharmed after being found near the Bran ning home across from her residence. Her hair was matted clothes muddy and legs swollen from exposure.
Mrs. Josephine Abadie, 47, of New Orleans, suffered critical burns to her body when a kerosene can used to start a kitchen fire ignited. The incident occurred early today, authorities reported.
In Shreveport Louisiana on April 20 the Caddo parish grand jury returned two indictments within 1 hour 20 minutes. Fred Lockhart 38 an itinerant salesman is charged with murder and criminal assault for luring 16 year old Mae Giffin from her home eight days earlier and killing and assaulting her. Both offenses carry the death penalty. Judge Robert Roberts thanked and discharged the jurors after the report. Lockhart will be arraigned after a five minute recess with Lal Blanchard and W A Mabry named as defense counsel. Foreman Leonard Daniels led the panel with 11 other members listed.
In Shreveport Louisiana on April 20, Fred Lockhart identified himself as a participant in the 1915 Leo Frank lynching in Georgia. He said he drove the car that transported Frank from Milledgeville to Marietta for hanging and admitted joining the mob that stormed the Milledgeville prison. National guardsmen patrolled the courthouse grounds as Lockhart, whose real name is D B Bunce Napier, described his actions amid the ongoing case and a $1500 reward for participants.
