Salvation Army appeals for aid to save families

Twenty six thousand people in northern Alabama coal fields face starvation as the Salvation Army warns the state must expand aid. Governor Kilby was briefed on the appeal from the Southwestern Division based in Birmingham. The group says resources are stretched and additional help is needed now.

Germany balks at transfer of gold reserve to occupied area

Berlin in April reports the German cabinet undecided on replying to the reparations commission demands to move the gold reserve to the occupied zone. North Louisiana Truckers Plan Organization in Parish

Farmers from Ouachita and neighboring parishes will meet in West Monroe on Saturday April 30 to form the North Louisiana Truck Growers Association. Led by Ouachita farm agent B M Jackson the move mirrors efforts at Hattiesburg and Crystal Springs. The same day may see North Louisiana Jersey breeders gather as West Monroe hosts trade day with an arranged program.

Perryville Store Robbed Again Despite Count

The Perryville store of J. A. Perry on the Ouachita Morehouse line was robbed last night for the second time in a week. Sheriff Arthur Grant said the proprietor had not finished counting, but it is believed several hundred dollars worth of merchandise was taken, mainly guns knives and hardware implements.

Busy Bee Cafe Seized Over Debts to Monroe Co

The Busy Bee Cafe at the Missouri Pacific station owned by Angelo Kanelos has been seized by the sheriff on order of the Sixth Judicial District in the Pluming & Gas Appliance Co versus Angelo Kanelos case to satisfy a $1,286.70 judgment. Kanelos faces a federal charge for possessing liquor valued over $3,000 found in the cafe vault and was released on bond for grand jury investigation.

Aged Riverton Man Arrested for Bootlegging

Harry Ridge Evans, about 76, was arrested by Policeman W. Sterns and turned over to authorities on liquor possession charges. He reportedly bootlegged on Monroe streets, displaying alcohol including a quart and a half pint and later five quarts from a suitcase. A hearing before United States Commissioner William O’Kelly was expected.

Appeals Court Adjourns Here For Last Time Moves For New Domicile

The Louisiana Second Circuit Court of Appeal in Monroe will adjourn this afternoon and likely never sit here again as a constitutional convention moves to establish a permanent domicile, probably at Alexandria. The Ouachita parish courthouse’s decay is cited as the reason Monroe loses the bid, though the court has long sat in several North and Central Louisiana towns. Eight Ouachita parish cases were heard today, with others from Jackson, Richland, Union, West Carroll, and Natchitoches parishes.
