Hot and humid conditions are expected in the East and Southeast on Monday while the rest of the nation turns cooler. The Pacific Northwest will see rain, and showers are forecast from the western Gulf to the Midwest and eastern Plains.
Scattered showers and possible thunderstorms across Arkansas today, increasing tonight and Tuesday with locally heavy rainfall chances in the west. Temperatures rise to mid 60s to upper 70s with lows in the 40s to 50s, while Mississippi remains very warm with scattered thundershowers northwest and widespread clouds elsewhere. Highs reach mid 60s to mid 80s across the two states, with humid conditions persisting into Tuesday.
Monroe Public Works Commissioner Luther T Harper says he did not appoint David White Sr to a council committee. White insists the group must authorize any participation. Harper says White was appointed by the city council and notes the committee aims to dispose of the trash dump west of Booth Street, not pursue politics. He welcomes meetings with the Concerned Citizens Committee for city betterment.
The Monroe City School Board and the Parish School Board will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. to consider bids and approvals. Monroe will open bids for cafeteria furniture a steam cooker and bid advertising for cafeteria uniforms tables chairs and toasters. Parish will evaluate bids for vocational education cafeteria equipment plexiglass and teaching materials for the summer program and review a Title IX report.

Five cities resumed water intake after officials confirmed that a deadly wood preserving chemical in derailed train barrels did not contaminate Nickajack Lake. Authorities said three intact drums in the river pose no danger. pumps restarted and water will be tested again.
Louisiana retailers meet Tuesday at the Monroe Chamber of Commerce offices to discuss upcoming legislative issues. Hugh Hyman of the Louisiana Retailers Association speaks on Sunday closing laws shoplifting and non returnable bottles. Similar sessions follow in Bastrop and Ruston with chamber sponsorship.
A 17 year old West Monroe youth and two juveniles were arrested by Ouachita Parish Sheriff deputies for simple burglary. They were linked to breaking into a house trailer on Camp Road in West Monroe in March.
Louisiana AAA members monitor a proposed three cent per gallon gasoline tax to fund public transportation in metropolitan New Orleans. The bill to be presented to the Louisiana legislature is urged by the New Orleans Area Regional Transportation Authority. In Ouachita Parish the Ouachita Multi-Purpose Community Action Program seeks federal Title 10 funds to hire retired workers for minor home repairs and indoor plumbing installations in sub standard homes.
Storms over eastern Texas sustain severe thunderstorm warnings and flash flood threats. Infants swept into flood waters on U S 59 in Goliad County are missing and feared drowned as parents flee flood threat. Authorities close a 23 mile stretch of U S 59 between Godad and Victoria amid widespread rain and unsettled temperatures nationwide.
A 12 member jury was being selected under Judge Lemmie O Hightower. Assistant District Attorney Brien Crawford represents the state and Monroe attorney J Michael Hart defends. Other criminal cases on the docket through Wednesday include drug charges armed robbery theft and burglary.
A broad weather front sweeps across the Atlantic coast states through New England and the Appalachian region into the lower Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. It brings cooler air from the southern plains to the Rockies and toward the Pacific Coast.
A student driving lesson ended with a car hitting a residence at 1401 South 7th Street Monroe. Gertrude Battaglia 55 of 1311 South 8th Street received a citation for negligent driving and driving without a license. Her husband Joseph Battaglia was cited for allowing an unlicensed driver to operate the vehicle. The house owned by James W. Smith sustained moderate damage.
