Sheffield 28-Year-Old Awaiting Death in Angola Penitentiary
Joseph Sheffield, who shot Deputy Sheriff John L. Waller on June 14, 1953, remains in Franklin Parish jail awaiting execution. He is one of 17 inmates on death row at Angola and plans to seek a U S Supreme Court appeal. A 90-day stay was granted by the Louisiana Supreme Court in February. Sheffield has been in Richland Ouachita and Franklin parishes jails since the killing. This June 14 marks his fourth prison anniversary.
