General probe into railroad rates and conditions ordered

A senate resolution authorized by Chairman Cummins directs a general probe of railroad maintenance costs efficiency and rate reductions starting about May 1 with railroad executives as first witnesses. The inquiry aims to assess maintenance costs efficiency and methods to cut freight and passenger rates.

Monroe People Pushing Wells In Haynesville Fields

The Haynesville Oil Company, formed by Monroe Winnfield and Alexandria businessmen, prepares an extensive drilling campaign with two wells planned three miles south of the Haynesville oil zone. Sid Simmons Drilling of Monroe starts one well. the second begins next week. The company owns 8000 acres in Haynesville, with seven nearby locations and a $150000 capital. Nearby, Grayson No 2 wild gas well near Monroe faced blowout but is to be saved soon. New drilling rules under act 250 of 1920 set to take effect April 26.

Famous Negro Pickpocket Back In Monroe After Long Escape

Jesse Jenkins, a negro fugitive from Monroe since 1918, was arrested in Columbus, Ohio and brought back by Officer Booth to serve a sentence for pickpocketing. He had been in Columbus penitentiary and was to be paroled when his Monroe warrant was found. Inspector R. E. Heap notes Jenkins is a renowned local criminal. He was previously arrested in Holly Springs, Mississippi, under habeas corpus but released there, delaying Monroe authorities.

Funeral rites for Augusta Victoria held at Royal residence

Amid tolling bells a funeral service for Augusta Victoria former German empress took place in the Royal residence. At the foot of a simple coffin stood four sons of the former royal couple who attended the ceremony freely, during days of Hohenzollern rule.

Black man pleads guilty in Logtown shooting case

Columbus Lee, a Black man, pleaded guilty in the Sixth Judicial District before Judge Fred M. Odom to shooting with intent to kill. He received a sentence of one to three years in the state penitentiary. A concealed weapon charge was not pressed. The incident involved a posse and a volley into brush, with Lee wounded in the hand after surrendering.

Dike Cut-Off Plans Deferred by Tensas Levee Board

The Tensas Basin Levee Board postponed action on Boeuf river cut off until after the constitutional convention on drainage. Richland citizens urged deferral while Ouachita Caldwell and Morehouse residents pressed for the project to avert flood damage, with estimated cost of 15 000 to 20 000. The board remains split as northeastern Louisiana opposes the cut off and others insist it would save thousands of acres by diverting waters from LaFourche lake into the Boeuf river.
