After the Titanic wreck, the Carpathia docked in New York with 745 survivors. Survivors recounted calm officers and heroic acts by men, notably Captain Smith, and musicians who played as the ship sank. The tragedy claimed 1,595 souls after the collision with an iceberg.
Reports from New York describe the Titanic disaster as survivors reach harbor aboard the Carpathia. Col. Archibald Gracie recounts rescue efforts and the ship’s final hours including Ismay and Astor actions, with women spared when possible and no panic aboard.
New York on April 19 reports survivor E. Z. Taylor of Philadelphia leapt into the sea just after the ship began to sink. He escaped with others, and authorities continued to search for additional survivors and investigate the disaster’s causes.

The Carpathia arrived to a vast crowd at the Cunard docks with rain adding a funeral air. Survivors were landed amid hushed awe as groups departed from the ship. docking began shortly after 9 o clock.

In Tallulah Louisiana April 17 fifty to sixty white residents remain as floodwaters rise five to six inches in twelve hours. Stores flood leaving two groceries as only food sources with dwindling stocks. Residents fear hunger if relief does not arrive within days as cisterns flood and water must be carried by skiff from high ground.
