San Antonio April 18 Gen Bell after an investigation reported to Funston that he believes the report of Villa's death was manufactured at Juarez. The dispatch notes snipers targeting U S officers and a failed chase toward Villa with no prospect of resuming pursuit.
Archived dispatches reveal Carranza forces blocking the pursuit of Villa near Parral and Parral garrison treachery allegations. Major Tomprins reported a written threat from General Deteane of the Parral column. In El Paso, officials said hostilities have blocked the route toward Villa's hideout.
