By Associated Press Birmingham April 17 nine business houses and one dwelling were destroyed by fire today at Berry Alabama. The blaze caused extensive damage to commercial properties and left several residents homeless. local authorities investigated the cause as unknown pending fire department reports.
An assassin fired at Mayor Mitchel as he entered a City Hall car. The shot hit Corporation Counsel Polk in the mouth, causing a serious but not fatal injury. David Rose was identified as the attacker, who was restrained by the chauffeur before a second shot. Rose had sought the mayor recently but was turned away for odd behavior and is believed mentally unbalanced.
Three witnesses identified Walters as present near the scene when a boy appeared. They saw him at the vicinity and described his actions shortly after the incident. Authorities confirm the identifications are part of the ongoing investigation.
The Opelousas trial of W C Walters for kidnapping Robert Dunbar rests on testimonies of sightings near Lake Swayze and in Mississippi. Opelousas La April 17 Mrs C P Dunbar one of two claimants in the 1912 disappearance case testified in the Walters kidnapping trial. She identified a boy in Walters custody as her son saying a mother’s instinct led her to recognize him by face form and a marked mole and she described the scene in Columbia Mississippi where identification occurred.
