Ouachita Parish Tax Assessor Odis Russell extends the homestead exemption deadline due to a large number of unreturned cards. About 3,000 eligible homeowners may have not signed. Residents may sign at the Tax Assessor's office during normal parish hours. officials say state changes do not affect homestead rights.

U.S. Bases Face Closures Across Nation

Navy Secretary John Warner told Congress that 274 military installations, including Boston Navy Yard, would close to save about 1 billion dollars a year. The plan would cost 18,640 military and 21,172 civilian jobs, with Boston Yard slated for closure while Philadelphia and Portsmouth yards would stay open.

Old River Seawall Collapse Triggers Floodgate Openings

The Corps opened 52 of 72 floodgates at the overbank Old River structure near Coochie in Concordia Parish after a seawall collapse and heavy rain. The Morganza Spillway will be opened Tuesday at 6 am to relieve flood pressure, with officials noting six days notice isn’t possible. Opening the gates raises water on the Black River near Acme by about 2.5 feet and shifts floodwater toward Morgan City as levees are shored up.

Tornado Injures Guard at Angola State Prison

A tornado touched down at Angola State Prison injuring guard Freddy Campbell who was cut in the stomach by debris hurled from the tower. About 40 prisoners were in the cellblock. no other injuries were reported and the wall buckled outward rather than collapsed. Prison operations were not disrupted.

Closure Of River Dam Impossible
