The defending champions the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees enter the season as favorites despite key players sidelined. Yanks miss with Mantle hamstring, Howard groin, and Berra finger while Camilo Pascual and Don Larsen square off in Washington. Houston crowd expectations are high with Ike poised to throw first ball.
Monroe Sports of the Evangeline League began workouts at Legion Memorial Stadium ahead of tomorrow's season opener against Alexandria. Manager Ed Head fields 20 prospects from three clubs, including Dick Lindsay and Phil Stevens, with Yorktown and Newburgh names among the players.
Cincinnati drops a 46 to 8 loss to Indianapolis as Pitula gets the win. Milwaukee beats Cleveland 5 to 3 with Johnson credited the win. Sam Snead outlasted Fred Wampler in a 72-hole finish at Greensboro tying at 279 and winning on the second playoff hole with a 30-foot birdie putt. The Evangeline League meeting on the eve of the 1956 season postponed any decision on Negro players to May 6. The eight club Class C league opens with a 140 game schedule on Tuesday. Lafayette and Lake Charles include Negro players on rosters. Baton Rouge parks will not host teams with Negroes. New rule sets 15 men per club: three veterans eight limited service four rookies.
