Jones had been awaiting transfer to the Texas State Penitentiary for a life sentence after killing Doyle Jackson near Texarkana on October 8.

Teenagers Elope in Borrowed Plane Framed by Weather
In Rochester New York a 17 year old boy Michael J Abbruzze Jr and his 15 year old girlfriend eloped Friday in a borrowed single engine four seat plane. Poor visibility forced a landing in a farm field about 60 miles east of Rochester. The flying school said the craft was used without permission. A deputy sheriff found them on the plane and they were brought back to Rochester. Abbruzze faces first degree grand larceny and third degree burglary charges and is jailed awaiting grand jury action. The girl will be turned to juvenile authorities.

No One Lost As Tankers Rush To Aid
The 8,000 ton freighter Marine Merchant sank off the New England coast after its crew of 35 was rescued. One seaman was injured. The ship broke its back in mountainous seas during a gale. It had sailed from Port Sulphur Louisiana for Portland Maine on its 241st voyage. Tanker Esso Raleigh rescued Capt Robert P Ruse and 25 crew and took them to Boston. Daru retrieved the other nine and brought them to Portland. The mayday came around 10:30 pm Thursday amid roaring winds and a cracking midships fracture. The vessel slowed due to the gale, engines were stopped, lifeboats readied, and blankets tossed aboard. The SOS was delayed before the ship broke.
