Jerusalem observes Good Friday with dawn pilgrimages to Calvary as crowds gather despite structural damage to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Authorities restrict entry in groups of ten after an October earthquake damaged supports.
American Telephone and Telegraph Co reports net income of 38,634,257 for the three months ended March 31 after taxes and charges, or 2.07 a common share, vs 643.58 million in the prior year. Walter Gifford notes Bell system net gain of about 98 thousand telephones in Q1, with prior quarter gains and 1937 figures contrasted.
Insurgent forces under General Miguel Aranda plant their red and gold banner on the Mediterranean coast near Villarez at the Spanish border, severing land links between Barcelona and government Spain. Irun officers claim the Franco offensive reached its 31 day goal as Aranda’s troops push across the coastal highway and enter Vinlaroz, 108 miles southwest of Barcelona.
Easter buying at high level this year boosted by Easter prep. Retail sales rose 5 to 15 percent above last week at leading distribution centers across the nation and 2 to 5 percent above the corresponding week last year. The rise over 1937 is largely due to Easter falling three weeks later this year.
Washington April 15 The president chose the warmest evening of the year for a fireside chat on economic problems. The high reached 84 degrees yesterday afternoon and remained mild as he spoke at 10 30 p m It was the hottest April 14 in 42 years prompting him to wear a gray pin striped business suit instead of a dinner jacket.
Washington April 15 Opponents in the house oppose the wage hour bill citing the elimination of all wage differentials. Tennessee Democrat Representative McReynolds led the southern opposition and doubted the measure would reach the floor. Proponents grew confident as a new bill with a 25 cent minimum wage and no differentials won backing from the labor committee. Chairman Norton said passage to the president’s desk looked good as Roosevelt urged action in his fireside chat.
Ten Americans reached Shanghai today after four months of fighting around Mokanshan in Chekiang province. They reported the province overrun by guerrilla bands, a 400-strong garrison at Mokanshan, and Japanese aid escorting evacuees to Hangchow before a Japanese train brought them here. Notable evacuees include Professor and Mrs. D. L. Sherertz and four Roanoke, Virginia children, Mrs. W. H. Park of Hawthorne, Florida, and Mrs. H. L. Lone of Chillicothe, Texas with two children. Mary C. White of Hawkinsville, Georgia stayed with Chinese Christians there.
Premier Edouard Daladier, wielding dictatorial powers, moved to end a metal workers strike that had halted aviation plants. He scheduled immediate negotiations with Italy while pressing for a swift return to production in nationalized and private aviation firms. The cabinet set terms for the remaining workers to resume work.
In New York on April 15 the president and two foreign envoys delivered a united front, reaffirming the Monroe doctrine and declaring outsiders must stay out of the Americas. Ambassador Hugh Wilson in Berlin underscored the stance, while Ambassador Steinhardt in Lima urged Latin American unity against old world predation.
Hollywood April 15 three process servers pressed a deposition order on Mrs Lillian Bernstein in Jackie Coogan’s $4 million accounting suit against her and Arthur L Bernstein. Electric gates blocked the Burbank home as a maid said Mrs Bernstein had gone to Palm Springs.
In Shanghai on April 15, Japanese spokesmen avoided denial of a major defeat in southern Shantung. Foreign experts estimate over 60 thousand Japanese engaged, with 7,000 to 10,000 killed and 20,000 wounded, while Chinese losses ran higher. More than 100 Japanese tanks were captured as the rout unfolded.
John James Holmes 20 of Utica New York was arrested April 11 by State Police Officer W E Brodnax and held for investigation. He was being taken to Rockdale Texas in custody of Constable W C Colvin to face a highway robbery charge for the Rockdale filling station holdup. Holmes was nabbed hitchhiking on Highway 80 near Sterlington Road. Brodnax said he bore a strong resemblance to Owen Holmes shown in a March 17 bulletin. Rockdale officers identified the prisoner from photographs sent by Captain Rex Ensminger of the Monroe district.
Atlanta April 15 The Southern Railway company announced it has asked for bids to be submitted by April 30 on 5000 freight cars.
First Assistant Chief H E Roberts Fire Inspector L J Hunnicutt and Fire Captain J W Faler of the Monroe department will attend a one week firemanship course in Baton Rouge starting Monday. Faler already left Monroe while Roberts and Hunnicutt depart Monday morning to study gases and allied subjects and inspector work. The annual free program draws firemen statewide and covers fighting, pumps, ventilation, gas and oils, first aid and rating.
O K Allen Jr son of the late Governor and Miss Corinne Kahle of New Orleans were married in Winnfield attended by family friends. Guests included Dr and Mrs Jorda Kahle and Lolita Kahle. The couple will travel to El Paso Texas after the ceremony. The groom studies law at Louisiana State University.
President Roosevelt combats unemployment and low demand, urging government and public action. He stresses securing democracy and personal liberties, stating that government must act to restore buying power and economic upturn amid rising global autocracy.
Los Angeles April 15 deputies saved a 55 year old man from enraged neighbors after the battered body of Jenny Moreno seven was found in weeds near her home. Blood stained clothing was found in embers of a fire in the suspect's yard as John Moreno located his daughter's body head bludgeoned about noon nearby. Deputies held the suspect for questioning.
President Roosevelt said he would ask Congress to tighten anti monopoly rules and tax income from all future government bond issues and government salaries. He outlined two messages on these subjects and noted a push to end exemptions on bond issues and to tax salaries and wages at federal and state levels.
Judge Ben Dawkins in federal court sentenced Dr Matthew Hargrove and Matthew Hargrove Jr to probation after they pleaded not guilty to narcotics charges in a Harrison act case. Norman Harvey received 18 months in El Reno for transporting a stolen truck and related offenses. The court warned the Har groves against future violations.
A wireless message from Mackay reports the fishing schooner Exeter sank south southwest of Seal Island on Brown's bank off Maine. The Exeter owned by General Sea Foods of Boston usually carries nine crew. Earlier a direct message said the vessel was sinking rapidly with no time to launch lifeboats.
